I have had one ADBV go bad on a Purolator once that was given to me. But it was bad from the get go ...

My Ford Ranger complains bitterly for about 3 seconds on startup post oil and filter change if I don't fill the filter with oil. I want the ADBV to work well. Normally builds oil pressure quickly.


The oil filter is pointed straight down on that particular engine though, the ADBV doesn't have to do anything to keep the oil in the filter in that application.

On the 4L Ranger, the filter is canted at about a 45 degree angle with base mostly up. If the ADBV leaks, the galleries can empty.
 
^^^ Yep, still need an ADBV to keep all the galleries full of oil, even if the filter is vertical with base up.
 
I'm going to go ahead and use the larger filter. Probably not any benefit to the bigger filter since I'm keeping the oil intervals relatively short at around 6500 km/4000 miles.

Also going to send it 1st oil analysis to Blackstone and will see if I can't extend the intervals a bit.
 
Seems like the only issues with using an oversized filter are only potential problems and abnormal situations.
ie the filter should not be draining out, regardless of size.

The benefits far outweigh the potential cons in my assessment like more filter media/capacity, lower delta-P, less bypassing and a minor bump to system capacity.
 
When most filters have far more capacity than needed and are easily run for two OCI's?

I can't even imagine where you got your info. There is nothing more to a big filter than good feelings. No PROVEN benefits at all, just imagined ones...
 
What's to prove? It's indisputable that more of the same filter media translates into lower delta-P and higher load capacity in foreseeable operating conditions, and thus logically less time in bypass. How can one dispute that?

Trying to classify those indisputable facts as 'imaginary' are where the real feel-good apologetics come into play IMHO If you don't want to stray from ostensible instruction and use a larger filter, then don't. The fact that some OEMs like Honda suggest an every other OCI filter change bears absolutely zero insight into their logic, which many suspect is based on environmental/economical concerns and a selling point to cost of ownership. Out of the things that I know, I do know that more of the same filter media is always a positive thing. What I absolutely do NOT know and would never profess to know, is the reasoning behind the alternating filter change suggestion of some OEMs and even less convinced am I about it being based on ultimate engine longevity, well beyond warranty, a period that only the end consumer is concerned about.

If there ever is a lapse in OCI, a snap cold spell, an emergency trip across the country at the end of an OCI I'll be happy to know I have the best filter on there to deal with extra contaminant load, less time bypassing with stone cold oil and that extra few ounces of TBN sacrificing oil in the system. That's what makes me feel good.

One more thing you can do is to change the threads to be able to get a bigger/better filtering filter on your bike or vehicle. I did this on my Suzuki C90-T and my S2000. On the S2000 I went from M20X1.5 to 1-16 so I can run a Donaldson DBL7349 oil filter.

When I change the oil next time that filter is going on and I'll let you know how my little experiment goes.

Many years of oversized on many motors. Keep in mind the long runs used to be 7500 miles - some small factory filters are not that HE - and some of us would rather have an extended life, oversized, and high efficiency even for that OCI. Permeability is both porosity and area - yes they filter good dirty - but that means PxA=F.
Just comfort zones - mine is being 10 miles from the blacktop (often) and knowing I did too much PM ...

Not from the supply side if the ADBV is sealing correctly ... which is the side that counts, "Jack".

I know alot of folks with the 4.0 I6 in jeeps run the motorcraft FL1A or equivalent. I have for a little while now. In all my "research" I've never heard of any issues doing this, but I cant say 100% there is benefits.
 
Upsizing is an individual preference. As noted likely no proven benefit. That said, when it comes to the topic 6607/14612 size and the SAE thread cousin 4967/14476, I'd use the longer 7317/14610/57356 and 4386/14477 respectively if practicable. Same specs, just longer with more media area. In these cases, seems more like a reasonable upsize.

How did you change the thread type if you dont mind me asking? Was it a double threaded tube?? TIA
 
Awesome! I've been looking for an M18xM20 male stud to convert a GM to M20. Such a hard thing to find pre-made , it appears a machine shop is the really the only practical option. Thanks for the reply

For my G37, I use either the specified filter or the oversize filter. I prefer to go by the specification, but sometimes the specified filter is out of stock, or the oversize is a bit cheaper, or I am just feeling like doing something different. The only real downside you could face is if there was a filter failure. The filter manufacturers' warranties are predicated on following their application guide, not grabbing something that's pretty close and going with it. I really don't worry about that much, but I'm not, as a matter of course, seeking a larger filter than specified each time I'm buying one.
