In early 2000s Toyota had the infamous 1ZZ-FE engine which had defective oil rings from the factory and was burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles.
That oil burning issue affected the 1998-2002 Toyota Corolla. Yes, I've seen several youtube videos on that.
The 2003 and newer Corolla's were unaffected by that issue.
The 1ZZ-FE in the 2003 to 2008 is bullet proof.
There are so many posts on Reddit about that 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla with peoples odometers getting stuck at 299,999
due to a programing mistake in the firmware. But so many people's odometers reached 299,999 and got stuck because those cars were bullet proof, reaching 300k miles in large #'s with minimal maintenance and repairs. That generation Corolla is likely the most reliable generation ever.
The used car market prices those cars appropriately (still $6,000-$9000) despite their age.
The main difference is that a Toyota Corolla at 300k miles is still reliable. It's a testament to Toyota's quality control.
I don't think any other vehicle manufacturer can match the reliability of Toyotas once the car reaches 300k and remains reliable.
Other manufacturers cars fall apart at 300k. Toyotas don't.
