The 5qt deal at Walmart doesn't look very good when you open a bottle of used oil!!! Seriously, I was changing the oil in my Silverado. I poured a some of a new quart bottle in the filter to prime it and dumped the rest in the engine. Then I proceeded to open the 5qt bottle...but wait....this bottle opens really easy compared the the 1qt bottle I had to muscle off. But that's not all...there's no foil seal...under the cap is dirty and the oil in the bottle is dirty. It's used oil that some jack off returned to Walmart to scam them for the cash and the joke is on me!!!!! Yes Walmart exchanged it without question, but I still had to run out there in the middle of changing my oil. When I grabbed the new bottle I asked the automotive associate who's been back there for years if this has happened before and she said oh yeah.

I have never heard of anyone doing this and whoever it was is a scum bag loser! I hope no BITOGER would ever even think of doing something like this!

Guess I'll be checking the caps when I buy oil from now on.

Waiting.... I just know someones going to chime in and tell you to chime in and do a used oil analysis, then proceed to tell you to continue to use the oil so your not considered wastefull.. LOL.

Seriously, thats a ugly story.. check your caps from now on. lesson learned.

Wow....I would expect that in NY but not in Iowa.
It's important to check the cap whenever you buy oil.....some jerk could replace Mobil 1 with new, cheap dino and you'd never know the difference.

What was I thinking? Returning that oil wasn't very green of me was it?

Oh, yes. People also like to return used oil filters and/or switch the expensive filters into the cheap filter boxes. Its even funnier with the translucent Bosch filters when you see a orange FRAM sitting in it.

Maybe thats what happened... Or maybe someone left the jug outside the Wally TLE. The tire jockey didn't know what to do with it, so he moves it inside. Then, it makes it's way around the shop until someone finally grabs it to stick it back on the shelf when they walk in to get a filter for the 68 Caddy that someone needs a basic change in. Either way... check your caps. I look for the tamper ring to be whole, and I give the bottle a gentle squeeze. If the bottle resists, it's sealed. If not, it should smell like fresh oil, not some lowlife's dregs that came back so he could score a cheeseburger and a hit of something illegal.

It says right on the bottle "Return Your Used Oil at Walamrt."

Someone just took it literally.

It could be that someone just brought the bottle in and left it there. Then some flunky put it back on the shelf.

When I return oil, they always check the cap to make sure it is tight.

That is possible since I bought it at a Walmart with a service center. Although the the auto employee at the store I returned to, that has no service center confirmed they have been scammed with returns.

Order from Amsoil and have it delivered. Zero chance it will be used oil.

As we all know, the customer service people at Walmart just go through the motions and take back almost anything within reason.

Go into a Walmart in 11PM or midnight. The people working there are as weird as the people shopping there.

In the few Walmart stores I have brought in used oil I had to log it in. But I have also just left it there if they were busy or no one around. But the used oil should immediately go out into the service area and be dumped. Its a hazmat item once its been used.

Similar story: bought 2 jugs of MC 5W-20 at Wally's. Got them out to the car and decided to look under the caps. Both of them had the foil partially detached, although I don't think the oil was tampered with...at least it wasn't obviously used. I put a small mark on them with a Sharpie and returned them at the customer service desk and got 2 more. Went back later that week to get another one and found both of the returned jugs back on the shelf, even though I TOLD them the foil seals were not intact.

Our area Walmart checks the cap to be sure the seal wasn't broken on any oil brought in for return. I check all oil bottles to see if they were tapered with before I check out of the store.

A few months ago I bought some plug wires at AAP. When I went to install them I noticed they were used. AAP happily swapped them out for me. Now I check each box before I leave the store.

Similar thing happened to me . Had my brother get a camshaft position sensor from AAP for his 99 300M. I get home from work to install the part , take out the old one to compare to the new one. Well the "new" cps was a used Mopar oem part , same part# on it as the failed cps. Had to take it back , which was a total waste of time and explain to the counterman. Funny thing is he didnt believe me at all until I showed him the failed unit . Situations like this happen all the time , always inspect your purchases .
