First post, so please forgive me if this has been asked already.

I've got a bunch of older (ten years +/-) Mobil 1 5W-30 oil that's been sitting on a shelf in the garage.

We're getting ready to change the oil on my son's 1995 Cadillac DeVille. He's been using Mobil 1 for the past 100k miles and is very happy with it.

I noticed that the bottles, even though still sealed, have some staining on the upper half of the bottles.

We opened a few bottles and the oil is dark brown. Clean, but dark brown in color.

Is this still usable or is it now lawnmower oil? What caused the color change?

Thanks in advance.

I would send a sample in for analysis, and see what they say. Be sure to note the age of the oil. I would not use it until then.

Shake it well and dump it in.

Get rid of that oil (in the usual, responsible manner) and buy some new oil.

Maybe it's out there, but I've never seen fresh oil that was dark brown. I like my motor oil to look like my olive oil. Makes me happy. :)

Has the garage been heated in winter? Has the oil been in a somewhat steady temp?
We're in Las Vega$.

The garage - actually a warehouse - is swamp cooled in the summer and is not heated in the winter. High temp maybe 85* and low temp maybe 55*. No extreme temps.

I'll get a pic of some of the oil in a cup and post it tomorrow.

Thanks!

I have a stash of Mobil Delvac 1, 2015 date code. This oil is dark brown.

They are in sealed 1 gallon jugs. No issues if you thoroughly shake them up to incorporate the additives before use.

I would not use any old oil that is not in a sealed container.
