Used Car - Toyota vs VW

I find this actually somewhat funny; CL has both an xB and a Jetta wagon that I find myself eyeing. Timely. But to see so many voting for Toyota has me wondering what site I am on.

Same.

We bought a 2019 Rav4 new - current generation. I would like to get another for my daughter, but a used 2019 is literally $25K, unless I want high mile strippie - which is $20K.

I can get a nicely appointed Tiguan for $15K.

Literally looking now at used X3's. In for a dime right?

In for a dime, indeed. In my case it might be nice to have commonality in vehicles, easier to jump into a different one and it just be the same. The kids are not “car people”, although my daughter preferred my ‘99 Camry to my Corolla, and my son prefers his ‘03 CRV over everything else.

I'll add - my Xterra and Frontier have almost identical drivetrains. Makes troubleshooting much easier. When something seems like its not working right can go see how the other one behaves?

I'm speaking from my experience owning 3 VW's over a period of 20 years. I love the TDI engine, if not for that, I would never own, nor have owned, VWs. I like the way they drive, handle, and smell. I would never own a gas/hybrid/electric VW. When it came time to replace them, with no TDIs available, I went with Toyota and Mazda. Easy maintenance and great reliability. The VWs required much more maintenance, and constantly had little things go wrong. If I were you, I would pick the RAV4.

how did you manage to pay 5,2k for them?
I didn’t. That is what they wanted.
Toyota wants to change whole assembly on order for tailgate to operate again electrically.
I paid $300 to fix it to point where there is no gap large enough to see sky from trunk. I sold that junk after that.

I'm rolling up to 70K miles in my '16 Camry 4 cyl.. Oil changes, filters, and a battery in 7yrs. Original tires are not aging well. So I'm gonna get a new set really soon
Hey, now, don’t rush into it. You wouldn’t want to be making people think Camry owners are big spenders….

Worked with an Infustrialal Designer who commuted into Boston and was fascinated to learn that his Camry required periodic oil changes. 48,000 miles. He checked the level occasionally.

I'm quite sure we're not. ;)

Geez... am guessing he live close to Boston? I see you're listing both Boston and Sunapee region, and the drive to Boston varies by quite a bit from either location. Sunapee is at least 100 miles each direction, depending on start/stop points.

Our Lex GS350 is kinda like a Camry with better paint and the other wheels propelling the car.
In 115K, nuthin' but services. Oh yeah and those Michelin Pilot Sports...

Been a great car; I spend very little on it. Except it sucks the gas...

As owner of VW and Toyota's I always stay baffled with junky Toyota batteries.
