I've had USAA for 20+ years. I don't ever recall not receiving a year end dividend check. Its always in my mailbox by mid December.

How do you get a check? I've never heard of this. They usually only allow us to apply the subscribers savings amount to my insurance premiums...

I forget why I've never gotten a quote from them. Either I don't qualify -- USAA is only for veterans and their families, and current military and DoD, right? Or they don't operate in this benighted state, like The General and several others who advertise here but don't sell coverage here.

You get the option of check, direct deposit to a bank account, or policy credit.

I just have it go to my USAA Savings Account

I have gotten a check since I can remember. Over 200 bucks this year.
I have everything insured there and they were competitive.
Never have had a problem with USAA.

CR says to get quotes from several companies every couple of years. A lot of ins companies slowly start raising your rates bit by bit, hoping you won't notice. I review mine every couple of years. Last year I switched everything to State Farm, and saved quite a bit over my old ins company.

My wife and I have been USAA members for 30 years. Some of my observations after using USAA for homeowners insurance, auto insurance, flood insurance and personal articles insurance in NC, PA and VA:

1. USAA tends to cherry pick where it will offer insurance coverage. They don't like writing auto policies in the Philadelphia area due to the high incidence of claims. Until about 2008, USAA was one of only two companies offering full homeowners insurance (including wind) on the NC coast, before they pulled out of the market altogether. One year USAA increased our HO insurance by 17%.

2. Some of their premiums are higher than average, but so is their customer service.

3. My platinum VISA card just raised it's interest rate to 8%, still better than most credit cards.

4. Unless it has a catastrophic year in paying claims, USAA still issues decent end of year rebate checks. Mine have been as high as $800.

In summary, you pretty much get what you pay for.

My checks wasn't that high. The last year I have full information on is 2015. I got a check of over $300 and over $900 was added to my Subscriber Savings Account.

That was just over 1/3 of my auto insurance premium for the 5 car, 3 child fleet I insure.

I've had incredibly good luck and experiences with USAA. I use them for Checking, Auto Insurance and Investing. I haven't cross-shopped in around five years, but when I did it wasn't even close.

Geico was the most comical. They had an option to automatically setup the quote based on my current premium. The only way Geico was able to match my USAA monthly coverage cost was by dropping my actual benefits by A LOT. I'm not talking about kind of close. I'm talking about laugh-out-loud bad. I'll have to check again some time soon, since my rates have been slowly rising since then, not dropping.

I use Navy Federal for my Home Loan, because USAA would not approve a mortgage for such a low amount. They let me go through the entire process, though, which is one of only two times USAA has [censored] me off. The fine print said that a small home loan was a no-go, but Johnny Loan on the phone said it wasn't a problem at all. I got through almost the entire process before being finally rejected due to insufficient loan amount...by about $5k.

The other time was when their Roadside Assistance crew dropped my banged up car at his cousin's shop instead of the USAA-approved shop I had selected. I was out-of-state and USAA said nothing about it until I had major issues with the repairs and they told me that I was on my own, since I had selected my own shop, not one of theirs.

As far as distributions: I received mine last year. I'm not sure why others wouldn't...

I've had them for almost 20 years now. Car insurance, banking, and auto loans. They just jacked up my auto insurance rates. I already know I'm over paying, but that was the last straw. I will be canceling my auto coverage with them.

Tried to get homeowners insurance, but they dont issue ANY policies in Florida at all. They pulled out after the 2004 Hurricane season.

I love the auto loan process. 5 minutes answering a few questions online, instant approval, and print out the loan docs to bring to the dealer. Easiest financing I have ever seen. No phone calls, no emails, so simple.

I LOVE USAA bank and have been with them for a long time and plan to stay there for a lot longer unless they implode.

I've been a State Farm Customer for auto insurance for over 25 years. I currently have my signature auto (03' Ford Focus) currently covered with liability only.... due to the vehicles age.

This year my premiums went up 35%. In talking with my agent,he explained the reason for the steep increase was that the state of Oregon changed the law making it more favorable to non-insured drivers.

I decided to check with about a half dozen other companies (ReInsurance, AllState, Travelers, Farmers, Amica Etc.) All preminums quoted were at least double and smmetimes as much as triple the State Farm quoted premiums.

I've been fully satisfied with State Farm over the years.... with only one major claim (Van totaled & not my fault....hit by a deer) and several minor incidents.

The difference is that State Farm will play the delay/deny/defend game every time. I have seen them deny a little old lady's vandalism claim because she reported it as "key scratches" and the adjuster said "this was not done with a key".

USAA, on the other hand, will genuinely make you whole again after a loss.

I'm on part 2 of insurance going up in North Carolina. This month is my second renewal with a premium increase. My payment has gone from $119/month in December 2015 to now $164/month. This is also after going from three vehicles to two. When I was rear-ended and had my Explorer totaled in May, I thought for sure my insurance would go down with the renewal in July but boy was I wrong.

My last company that advertises savings of more than 15% raised my rates by 40% over 18 months. When I asked why after 20 years with the company, given no change in my driving history, and an increase in my credit rating from mid-600s to over 750, (yeah, that matters) , the answer I got was "because the state authorized the increase"...essentially, because they could.

In my new company's good hands my rates were reduced by a third, back to that earlier lower rate. When I asked why my old company raised the rates so much, the new agent said it was likely because of the liability profile of its customer base...

Yes, it's a good thing to check rates with other companies every few years.

I see no "profile and preferences" option anywhere...

I only joined USAA last year despite being eligible since the late 80's.

I disliked my homeowner's carrier, and Met-Life was constantly raising my auto premium despite not having any claims for several years. I'd been with Met-Life for 25 years but they sure didn't treat me like it.

I saved several hundred dollars a year by switching my homeowner's and auto insurance to USAA. I'm surprised at their credit card and loan rates though. The rates at Navy Federal Credit Union are much better.

Thanks for the tip on dividend checks! I had no idea and I presume that the default setting is that you just get a credit when the policy is renewed. Fine by me!

We can't complain. Every year we get a check back, last month was a bit over $200. Rates are competitive with Erie, Allstate etc.

I can understand the insurance on autos increasing. We now live in the age where airbags deploying results in a total of the vehicle alone.

Friend of mine recently had an accident where all 13 of the airbags in her car deployed. Adjuster looked at the car from 10 feet away and totaled the car.

NFCU is definitely the better deal when it comes to loans. If only they offered insurance...
