Being in the industry I’m very curious to see where this goes. We had to basically help the UK build their program back from scratch. They still rely on us for our expertise.

The Royal Navy’s Astute class is so bad they had to bring in the Electric Boat guys from Groton to fix the Brits’ poorly designed/execute reactor. Their troubles did not stop with the powerplant either.

Australia has been wanting nuclear submarines for a while now but the contract with the French company got held up as Australia wanted them built in Australia and not in France. This gives them that.

Look for the US and UK to have a naval base in Australia soon.

Another news item that slipped under the radar is that Japan is six months out from having nuclear weapons. This might seem like a quandary but they are very worried about China.

No way Australia fields nuclear subs without a massive increase to their defense budget.

No way this is true. Japan has always been 'six months" from a working nuke, but I think constitutionally they can't unless there is major legislation...

Japan’s budget is minuscule in the grand scheme of things but they just finished building two carriers.

Japan's JDF budget is actually quite consistent and has been for decades due to their overall strong economy, as the Soviets complained about during the Cold War: that Japan could quickly expand their military into a world power if they had the actual political will to do so despite seemingly having a pacifist purely defensive mentality...

It is still a relatively new reformed country , America during its first years of implementing the constitution had a neutral position during times of european conflicts, even when people wanted war.

Japan is lucky for having a small population, industry, and most importantly for this to happen was from it being reformed during the time it was.

Em, no it isn't. Japan is possibly the worlds' oldest homogenous civilization/culture. If you are referring to the current order that reformed in 1945, they're still on the verge of turning 80 years old. But of course, Japan and Japanese culture were not created in 1945...

And has a small population? 😂

Are you talking capital outlay or operating costs? Operating costs would not be higher when you figure in the decrease in costs for elimination of things like conventional fueling ships, tenders, etc. Definitely a restructuring would be in order. Australians are a clever bunch, and have probably been making plans for when the day comes. With China and others' acting out, all our defense budgets should be going up.

Agree.. without Soviet, Japan would had conquer China in WW2. Russian knows well Japan since they have been fighting them in both world wars. WW1 Russia did take big hit from them

What? That is ridiculous. The Soviet Union did not even declare war on Japan until August 8, 1945, two days after the United States had already dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and just one week before Japan surrendered. Russia’s contribution to defeating the Japanese empire is zero.

The Chinese, mostly under The Nationalist Chiang Kai-shek, fought the Imperial Japanese fiercely and endured untold atrocities. China initially had a well trained army that was bludgeoned by the IJA and was re-raised and trained several times over. There was some Soviet support, even Germany initially trained the Kuomintang troops, but the US was their main benefactor, realizing that the Chinese held down hundreds of thousands of Japanese troops, if not millions...

This is not ridiculous this is history! i am talking about soviet japan war In China, after Berlin, Stalin did send troops to China. 3 week and 3 day long war. The surrender of Imperial Japan was announced by Japanese Emperor Hirohito on August 15 and formally signed on September 2, 1945.

Hilarious, just one week of declared war engaged against by the Soviets. August 8, 1945 Soviet Union declared was in Japan, and August 15 Japan surrendered. That is one week by any reckoning. QED. Stalin contributed nothing to the war in the Pacific and declared war against Japan just one week before it ended, only to make a land grab of Sakhalin island when the spoils were divided.
