Car was purchased May 2022 and now has 40k miles on it. Engine and transmission have been flawless. Doing 5k miles OCIs (doesn't use a drop) and had the CVT fluid changed at 30k miles. Just had brakes and brake fluid done at 40k miles.

Right before brining it for brakes, my son who drives it told me the screen for the radio was unresponsive. I went out and sure enough some of the screen responds to touch but much if it doesn't. They confirmed at the brake appt that it needed to be replaced.

I figured that was covered by the 5/60K bumper to bumper but nope it's covered by a 3/36k for which I was one month and 4k miles out of warranty.

Service manager gave me the number for Kia and said I may have some luck asking for goodwill and of course I'll at least make the call. The cost of a new radio unit is $985 including parts and labor.

Overall, happy with vehicle and hoping there will be some goodwill, if not $1000 isn't the end of the world.

Anyone want to give odds on any goodwill? :)

I'd guess somewhere between slim and none.
I had the exact same issue with a Chrysler that I bought about 30 years ago. Just 30 days out of warranty and the stereo died. Was basically told too bad, so sad.
I'm not sure how the Kia's are set up. Can you go aftermarket if they won't cover?

I'd try pulling some fuses and disconnecting the battery to try and reset the radio. You never know. I'd say there are aftermarket radios that might fit but they aren't cheap with installation.

Do you wear scrubs at work, Doc? Nothing says, “Hey, I’ve got lots of money to spend on a new car, so you want to be my friend” like wearing scrubs, or an M.D. ID when you walk in there to talk with the service manager…

I guess the days of getting a Craig headunit from the Circuit City and hard wiring it in are over. It's sad that a simple radio won't last 3 years in a modern car. Where did we go wrong?

Crutchfield has aftermarket head units that will fit. They even including the plug and play wiring harness, plus any other trim pieces, tools, etc. Much better quality than the same junk Kia would put in that broke for $1,000....

I replaced my entire sound system including running power and some new speaker wires in the Tundra so I'm confident I can do this job - just hadn't thought about aftermarket - thank you!

I dress like a homeless person on my days off and was rocking basketball shorts and cutoff t-shirt on my way to the gym...lol. He actually showed me the warranty page from the computer and sure enough the radio was only covered 3/36.

Thank you! I hadn't thought aftermarket but I am now!
No worries. Super easy to do also. The instructions you will get are step-by-step on how to do it, based on your car. End product will be miles better than the KIA junk in the car already. For a bonus, replace the front door speakers. Your son will love it. Huge upgrade over the tin cans that are in there now.

Non-responsive touch screens (digitizers) can be replaced. The work is a bit fiddly, but it's not hard at all. Just changed the digitizer on my 2008 Charger after years of wacky operation. Took me a bit over an hour and cost < 30 bucks via Amazon.

This is an example of a Kia digitizer. Not sure it's the one you need, but they are relatively inexpensive. Don't toss a good stereo if it only needs repair.

Considering how many replacements the Tiguan has had I get scared every time it goofs on us. Two screens and one backend unit(brains). I'd try the Amazon approach and just replace the digitizer. I am doing that in Colorado soon as mine is ghosting all the time now.
