Hello:

Just a routine UOA for our 2011 BMW E90 328i, N51.

12/10/2014 sample = German Castrol 0W-30, 4147 miles on oil
04/10/2016 sample = Liqui-Moly Leichlauf 5W-40, 128 miles on oil
09/20/2019 sample = BMW TPT 5W-30, 4913 miles on oil

Hengst oil and air filters. It is my belief the BMW TPT is Shell/Pennzoil GTL.

Mostly warm to hot summer temperature highways miles. Easy duty for both engine and oil, but the motor seems to like the TPT oil.

For an explanation of why I had only a 128 mile OCI for the Liqui-Moly oil, see my earlier thread. I reposted the original VOA and UOA results on 09/27/2019 (page 3).

Just so it makes it easier to follow, let's talk about the BMW TPT oil here, and Liqui-Moly on the other thread.

Anyway, FWIW.

It is SHell oil, but that TPT has NOACK 6.2%. I would say it is more stout package and better base oil than what Pennzoil offers in stores.

You could definitely go longer. I've been told that hwy miles cause about 1/10th the wear of city miles or something to that effect.

Q: Where did you buy this oil from? The only 30W BMW dealers stock is 0w30 (LL01FE) and 5w30 (LL04). I've been thinking about moving to the TPT(LL04) this March.

Turbo, this was the LL-01 version of the 5W-30. I bought it from RM European.

There are still bunch of online stores that sell TPT LL01. I do not think that BMW discontinued this oil. Probably dealerships streamlined offers. Also, there was a TIS that dealerships should use more MPG friendly oils due to demands by large % of BMW customers, whose driving is mostly confined to the cities. Some of N63 issues were attributed to that.
