Hello BITOG!

I idled a lot more this time than my previous sample. I idle the CUV at least 10-15 minutes 4 days a week for 3 months. That puts it at A minimum of 4.8-7.2 hours. However, I idled several more hours for things like waiting for wife to shop while I crank the heater in the Volvo so I speculate it was well over 7.2 hours but probably no more than 15 hours. I wanted to get the oil tested for fuel via GC method to see how it handled the idling.

After 5,131 miles the "Low Oil" message came on & checked the level HERE. I added 1 qt. of oil top up & I should've only added 0.75 qts since it put it above FULL by 1/8". I ran this sample of Mobil European FS 5w-40 for 8,470 miles total.

Soot at 0.14% & GC Fuel was 1.46%. This is good considering the idling I did. This engine is not a DI. A little note about buying Schaeffer's oil test kits off eBay. Schaeffer's will not stand behind them if buying from there. It was a bear to get the GC fuel test added to my sample testing even though I was willing to pay. Luckily a local rep did take my money to have that test done. Probably won't bother again with that hassle now that I know the fuel is in good shape w/cold MO winter idling so I'll save the extra $17.33.

Viscosity ending at 11.09 which is not unexpected at this mileage. This lab says 20% viscosity loss is considered normal & that falls within that range. I think their 10,000 mile claim is about right for this oil. I will point out that this kit was supposed to come with either a AN or BN test but it doesn't show so I will be calling them in the morning to get that resolved & I will post the results here when I get it. The previous sample was supposed to be a Valvoline Euro 5w-30 & you can see that 1st Sample in the image below as well.

I wonder if any oil was added to the first run of "Valvoline" prior to your ownership. What I'm getting at, is I wonder if the oil consumption rate was better, worse, or the same with the thicker oil.

So, now you know if/when the Low Oil light pops on, add 3/4 qt. :)

What oil did you replace the M1 5W40 with?

Your wear metal rate went down over 1ppm per 1k miles compared to the previous run. That is good news. Thanks for sharing your report with us!

The report looks excellent. Thanks for sharing. Do you plan on extending the OCI out to 10k miles or stick to the 8ish? It looks like it definitely could go to 10k based on this report.

FYI, if TBN depleted linearly (which we know it does not), you would reach a TBN of 1.0 at 16k miles.

If oxidation climbed linearly, you'd reach baseline +17 at 11k miles.

That gives you an idea of how much further you could go on this oil with similar driving conditions: seems 10k is a very safe number.

Do you know what the baseline oxidation for this oil is? I was looking through the VOA database and didn't see this oil listed.

I don't believe so & here's why... The first run of that Valvoline triggered the "Low Oil Level" message at exactly the same range as this second run (around 5k miles).

Yep! I'll expect it around 5k or so & only add 3/4 qt this next time..ha!
I replaced the oil with the same but with different grades = 6.5 qts of Mobil Euro FS 5w-40 & 1.5 qts of Mobil Euro FS 0w-40. I had to use a combo this time simply b/c that's what I have on the shelf. I'll be swapping over w/full sump to the 0w-40 later on.
Cu went down & the Si dropped in half. I did had that 1 qt though so not sure how it may have adjusted the numbers. I will say that this lab is the same one in the other Speediagnostix thread & they are reading low on this one as well. Supposed to be like 930 Ph not 602 but maybe the next full fill will get it up higher.

I may run it to 10k but I'm really wanting to run some Mobil X3 or X4 in the near distant future. This was a 5 month interval here so I'm putting on a few miles quickly. I found time to change it and installed and ez drain on the oil pan that I'll post the details in the general auto forum in a few days if I can. It is similar to a fumoto valve.

I think you're onto something. Oxidation may be what limits this FS to around their 10k mileage claim. 🙏 🙂

Got to thinking some more to answer your question (not a perfect answer). I don't know how much 5w-30 oil they added & I highly doubt they did an exact 7.70 qts. They most likely just dumped in 7.75-8 qts so that would effect when that "Low Oil Level" message would pop up. I think the 5w-30 actually popped up that message a few hundred miles past this last one with the 5w-40 in the sump but I put in an exact 7.70 qts of the 40 grade & if they put more than 7.70 qts of 5w-30 oil in it would "last longer" simply b/c it was fuller than the 40 grade. So I can't really tell you unless I ran 40 grade consistently then switched to 30 grade w/exact amount of quarts in the sump. I just leveled it off to 8 qts even & will be doing that going forward regardless of grade. (y)
