Another reason to change it. Neither the car maker nor the oil company say it should be or can be done.

It may be totally possible to do 15K oil changes for decades with out an issue.

Your on your own tho while you do it.

Pennzoil does have a limited warranty if you change it every 4,000 miles or 4 months, whichever comes first. http://www.pennzoil.com/#/warranty . AMSOIL's ASM is a bit better at up to 25,000 miles up to 1 year, whichever comes first. Your choice.

I would love to hear from anyone whom has ever tried to collect on either Pennzoil or Valvoline's engine protection warranty. Positive or negative outcome.

I think they have more outs in their fine print than anyone realizes.

BC.

They all have outs in their warranties, all oil companies. Follow the mfg recommendations, use the proper viscosity oil that meets the mfg specs. Keep records and invoices to show the dealer [if under a warranty] in an event of a problem, and enjoy the vehicle.

Hey tig, do i just call the number at the top to order the strips?

You can, or as I do I just use the back of a white business card. Give it an hour or so, but the test will give you a picture of the results compared to the web site cxomparisions.

Excellent idea Tig. I'll do the business card method. If I get a solid black rim around the dot, I'll reconsider my plan. Will try to get to this later tonite or tomorrow. Let ya'll know the results.

Eric, I'm looking to do the same thing on my Mazda6s, using the PU on got on Amazon last Nov for under $20. I'm currently running M1 0w20 going on 10 months, but only 5k miles on it. I also want to run PU for a year(K&N oil filter). The difference on my car is I only do about 7k yearly, so it won't as severe as yours. Let me know what you decide to do. Thx.

Complete overkill...using Ultra for 4K OCI's

Just use a good conventional like Mobil Clean 5000 or PYB....for less than half the price of Ultra.....still going 4K OCI's

The last time I did a OEM OCI was circa 1992.

I did a 25k mile 1 yr OCI on a Mazda 323 with it's 3.8 qt sump (Amsoil 10w40 - chged Ams. filter at 6 mo). That was perhaps nuts (along w/ several other 15-20k OCIs). That was 1995. Sold the vehicle (regrettably) two years ago.

The Mazda 6 has a 4.2 qt sump. The 1/2 qt top off keeps me sleeping OK. The run of M1 0w20 that burned nothing in 11k kept me up at nite.

I might be comfortable running an extended drain of 15k if the vehicle had mostly highway miles. But with the short trips that you've stated, I'd be very happy with 10k. You got your money's worth, why push it?

My 06 Mazda 6 (w/ about 82k) is approaching 10k miles on this fill of Ultra 5w20. Filled last July. 1/2 qt top up so far. Vehicle runs daily to two different schools, piano lessons, wrestling practice, groceries, etc. Typically on the road for 30 minutes at a time (city).

I'm planning to push thru to a 1 yr, ~15k mile OCI (chg in July) - I love the simplicity of it. My best friend is an Amsoil rep and he's done 1 yr 12-15k OCIs for the last 15 years. Never a problem. (I did several of these back in the day (but w/ an older vehicle)).

The oil is now pure black (yes, that means nothing). Does anyone have doubts on Ultra's adequacy for the task ?

Thanks!

Why do people get off on pushing oil to it's limits and beyond???

Change the oil!

I hear all these specs about how a certain Porsche has 2yr OEM OCIs, a certain Jaguar has 18 mo OEM OCI. And there's my best friend with his historic 1 yr OCIs. But I think all these apps have monster sumps (compared to mine).

If I even had 6 qts, I doubt I'd blink at a 1 yr OCI.

PU was never marketed or engineered for extended OCI. I would change the oil if it was my car. You can always go with Mobil 1 Ep, Catrol Edge, Amsoil,…if you need to extend your OCI.

Also a valid point.

But in Pennz various statements, they have said as much between the lines (that it can handle extended OCI - 15k was one of the #'s they mentioned (though per OEM specs - which may be for 8 qt sumps)).

In my app - brood on the chemistry for a min. 1/2 qt of 13 tbn topping to 4.2 qts. Assuming no filtration failure, I don't see the chemistry collapsing in the next 3 months.

I vote to change it a bit earlier, perhaps in April or May. If you do a UOA the results will entertain us here at BITOG.

Why early? First use of this particular oil chemistry, and to drain off the accumulation from winter operation.

If the UOA is encouraging, leave the next fill in for a whole year.

Yes, I reserve the option of freaking out and running out there and changing it in the May time frame. Plan to do a UOA w/ TBN and will post.

Tig, if you're still tuned in - I did the oil drop test (on a regular 3x5 card) - 9k on oil. coloring looks very uniform. no dark outline. oil is thus cleared to continue past 10k and beyond.

Some of my friends are for long ocis, some are against them. And I tend to side with my friends. Translation, I find myself easily persuaded by arguments on both sides. Sometimes I feel as though I'm bouncing around like a pinball on this issue.
