Ford Taurus - 1 year oil chg ... help!

Why not throw in a maintenance dose of Auto-Rx? It makes the Mobil1 perform better and will most likely reduce oilconsumption.

I am going to echo the oil analysis. It is the absolute best way to make this sort of determination. The 3.0 Vulcan is a bit of a wheezer, but bless it's little spark plugs it is durable. I am usually in charge of my grandmother's '91 Aerostar, and I do one year oil changes on it using AmsOil 5W-30 and AmsOil filters. I did change the filters twice a year per AmsOil's recommendation prior to the release of their new EaO filters. She drives quite a few dirt roads and "goes to town" (50 miles round trip) once a week. The oil analysis has always come back acceptable -- not great, but acceptable. Even when, like now, I am almost two months over due to change it. At 120,000 miles, it still only uses a quart or two over the course of a year as it always has.

Go with AmsOil or Mobil 1 EP and pull a sample each time you come home at least for the first year, and I think you will be happy with the results. From the experience I have had with AmsOil's EaO filter, I would not be worried with it going one year whatsoever. I am not sure about filter change intervals with any other filter, as I have not played with extended oil changes with any filter beyond AmsOil's.

Good luck!

You are a good son and obviously worried about this.

My thoughts:

1) Change the oil twice a year since you visit three times a year.

2) Or, the 10k oci is OK, at least with M1 Extended Performance.

3) Buy her a gift certificate to a repair shop you trust and call her on the dates you choose to get her to go to the shop for an oil change. You can even call the shop in advance of her visit if you want.

FWIW, I change my oil every 10K (Mobil 1) but at 6 month intervals.

It's tempting to do the UOA - if nothing else for a general health chk of the engine. Will think on it. I didn't help things - when she was here last May I topped it off a half-qt w/ the rest of my SuperTech HM 10w40 - I normally would condemn myself for that but figured it wouldn't be in there that long anyway.

If M1 0W-40 is used in the future, a UOA is only needed if you want to see if it is leaking coolant, sucking in lots of dirt, or has lots of fuel dilution. You already said it smells like oil when you smell it so it doesn't have fuel dilution.

M1 0W-40 will last a year in her car no problem if there are none of the issues above. It is one of the best long drain oils there is. If you know the above issues don't exist, no UOA needed.

0w/40 M1 is a real good oil for long oil change intervals .Engine and use being ok for long oil change intervals the 0w/40 is one of the oils that can do it.

Thanks! I'm indeed going with the M1 0w40 in my mom's car. Given the engine's age and the one year drain, I trust M1's 0w40 over 5w30 EP that's in it now.

Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 is the king of low oil consumption in my experience (both CI and CJ so far). So keep that in mind if you are worried about it. If the PAO oils are giving you great service without droppping the pan level below your comfort level between visits, them most definitely keep using them.
