Uber slashes pricing/Drivers in full revolt

I know of a few locals already will not pick fares for Uber. They just will not take any fares after working for a couple of weekends.

I never understood how that works out for the drivers. I didn't realize there were different rates for different cities, but the rates I saw were ridiculous.

I'm just not sure how this works out positively for someone .. unless it is a way to drive around for fun with very little loss.

I saw an email that said rates in Washington, DC are dropping. That's where I use uber the most...

I did t read the email yet, but assume it's related.

Guess it just goes to show that in the race to the bottom, this is an area where there is an over abundance of supply...

That's in NYC....so what? Let them quit and 1000 guys will show up to replace them.

My daughter attends college in Chicago and uses Uber every day. It is an excellent way to defer the high costs of car ownership in an expensive urban area. If some schmucks don't like the pay....get lost and go find work elsewhere.

Nobody cares about the plight of cab drivers.

The drivers in the City here in Cleveland charge big $$ to take drunk party goers home on the weekend. A 20 mile ride to the Suburbs can cost $100-200 during peak hours. But then again...a DUI costs $10,000.

Yep, only a fool would put soooo much wear and mileage on their cars for peanuts. The more you drive, greater chance for accident and damage. Tires are expensive, idiot passengers , risk of crime...etc...

Better just to have a $10 an hour job and avoid the headaches of being a Uber 'contractor'

One of my Saab buddies is an active duty Navy sailor and he recently started driving for Uber on the weekends in the Baltimore/DC area. Last weekend he told me he worked 1-6am and made around $130 after Uber took its cut. He's not going to get rich, but should be able to bring home a little more bacon if he works a couple of shifts like that every weekend.

A friend used to drive for Uber.

Was going just fine, then someone puked in the backseat.

He cleaned and dumped the car and stopped driving for Uber.

He had better have the permission of his command before engaging in outside employment. Depending on his billet, rating, and mission, outside employment might compromise his availability or effectiveness in his military capacity. For that reason, Navy regulations require the permission of his Commanding Officer prior to his outside employment.

He gets hurt, or isn't available because of his Uber driving, and there could be huge consequences. The Navy is looking to downsize...your friend might just be handing his command a reason to get rid of him.

End of a career. The most expensive "bit of bacon" I can imagine.

May I suggest the decaf?

A lawyer would agree with Astro.
The Risk/Reward is not worth it.

I think Uber makes the passenger pay for the cost of cleanup, could be as high as $250. But I think Uber drivers complain that it isn't enough to compensate them for the missed hours in getting it cleaned up. Puke bags are a popular sale item on Amazon, maybe he should have had some in the rear seat. Only a matter of time when driving drunks around.

Seems like supply and demand. Get too many drivers and the rates go down. I suspect Uber gets paid regardless. Some drivers will drop out and when they can't find drivers, the rates will rise.

Driving strangers around town at 1-6 AM can be very risky. Again not worth the money to be on the road, especially if you have a family and kids. I saw on TV some retired folks in their 60-70's are using Uber to supplement their income.

No thanks, I'll collect shopping carts at Walmart parking lot before I'm 'Ubering' at 60-70 years old....

I have a bunch of cab drivers as customers. They get a courtesy wholesale discount, Uber and Lyft drivers get no discount whatsoever. All the cabbies here have to get multiple licenses to be able to operate in this area, where the Uber drivers that have come to me love to point out that they don't have to.

Not my coup of tea. That goes to being either the uber driver or using their services.
I also read somewhere that uber drivers have a hard time collecting from insurance companies in case of accidents and uber is not compensating them either.
Their business model looks like a pyramid scheme.

No pyramid scheme, they just want bozo Uber drivers to take on ALL THE RISKS...

while Uber sits back and gets a percentage of your paycheck, it's a win - win situation for Uber. No need to protest in front of Uber HQ demanding better rates.

Similar to Fight For $15 and fast food / retail employees....

Actually, I kind of do, and I have no skin in the game. Chicago cabbies have to fork over hundreds of thousands of dollars to get their medallion from the city and they are subject to certain rules/scrutiny. For Mayor Tiny Dancer (whose brother very conveniently is an investor in Uber) to now give access to the airports to anyone driving for Uber doesn't strike me as reasonable.

But what do I know?

In legal matters Uber is on side of driver. Its illegal to operate uber locally however Uber is footing all legal bills of a local woman who insists on driving anyway and has been arrested multiple times on same manner. Free press at least for cost lawyers on staff likely.

Now that I have an appropriate car, I've considered Uber. I am in touch with someone (on a different board) that drives for them, and he loves it.
