U.S. clears way for truly driverless vehicles without steering wheels

I’ll just buy a scooter, or keep my old Harley running. This is getting beyond the horse and carrige vs automobile argument. Folks that live in the city think they are the only folks that exist. What happens if one of these modules fries, or voltage issues cause it to freak out? Any one on here ever had a suspension part fail while moving? I have, and it took everything i had to save it. Doing 60, having a balljoint separate, and instantaneously making a 90* right hand turn is real life. Ford cant even crimp a block heater power wire correctly…..PAAAAAAAASS

They do make a electric Vespa

I think they will gradually roll them out for delivery and long haul at night or other low traffic times, on designated route, then gradually adjust the road certification, traffic rule, improve design, etc. Imagine having driverless cars stay together "behind" other human driver cars in a crowd, and know when the lights will turn from green to yellow and will never run a yellow or red. It will not block traffic, it will not run redlight, and if someone else at the intersection run redlight it can detect it and avoid it. Seems like a win-win to me.

This is like how we moved from horses to automobile, the road changes over time and now completely different than the horses days.

No Thanks!
Imagine a guy riding horses say the same to automobile when it first came out, then 20 years later buy a car and retire the horses.

I personally don't want one, but I wouldn't complain about having a car that has the option to use self driving, like GMs super cruise or whatever it's called. Mostly for long road trips when you need a break but don't want to stop.

Gotta love media and its click-bait garbage.

The probability of steering wheels disappearing is 100%, well yeah of course. I'm sure at SOME point in the future cars won't exist either and everyone will be in space ships. If our current times have taught us anything, it's that the future is unpredictable. The advancement in technology is incredible for sure, but it certainly isn't flawless.

The current lawsuit of Tesla by State Farm is just scratching the surface of what is to come as far as problems that need to be worked out.

Full self driving level 5 vehicles IMHO won't be available for another 10 years at the earliest.

Level 5 means being advanced enough to find a space into a makeshift unmarked grass parking lot with cars all over the place at a farmers market or being able to discern other drivers and pedestrian intentions. I don't think "AI" or what ever computer programming is called nowadays is even there yet let alone onboard computing power and intervehicle communications. Of course technology advances quickly, bit I think it will take many more years at max advancement to get to the future of transportation.

There will need be to be additional standards and a bajillion other developments, legislation, and agreements between all manufacturers, states and countries. For the time being, we're just going to get fancier and fancier cruise control.

The ultimate issue with all of this, and i’m not talking about just modes of transportation, is that everyone tries to move forward at a lighting pace in designing and manufacturing the latest and greatest over priced piece of junk, be it a vehicle or a washing machine that has a tv screen. Its junk…” Powers that be” never just stick with what works all in an attempt to chase profits regardless of if it is the best idea or not. I mean….has anyone driven a new honda with their collision avoidance turned on? Its terrible. Ghost braking is a problem…. So thats not 100% yet it exists on public roads? Sure go ahead and pull the steering wheel…… Now there is a green light for the industry to jump headlong into trusting mass produced electronics to drive you and your family around at 80mph? Nah…. and lets talk cost of this stuff…. I have literally watched a grown man cry on the service drive because they had their block knocked with a $1,200 alternator repair, and in the grand scheme thats NOTHING. Its absurd. Industries are rapidly loosing touch with the reality that the average American lives in. If people out there can afford to own and maintain these $40k cars, $60k cars, $100k cars, well then good on em’, but that is not the reality for the majority of the population. Once again city folk only folk they think exist.

Really? Do you think this is rural vs urban here?
No sir, but i’ve personally never seen a Tesla, or a refrigerator with an integrated television screen, in Eldorado Arkansas, or Hooker Oklahoma. Technology comes out of Silicon valley, Austin Tx, etc. not Jewett Tx. or Nacogdoches. There are a whole lot of folks that live in Houston, but there are a whole lot of folk whom do not. I have been fortunate enough in the last 43 years to be able to travel all over this great country, and i can tell you this. The salt of the earth live a simple life, and most have for generations. They are not the ones who can afford these advancement, because these advancements dont matter to them. They dont put food on the table, and they dont put a roof over their heads. All of this technology comes with a premium. There is absolutely no reason why a new car, to drive to and from work, should be 35k+ dollars. Its undeniably ridiculous. So now we cram 10 grand more worth of electronics into the car so that it can drive us around while we are completely disassociated with life? So now it is 45k? And what is the argument? Cars wont run into each other anymore? Right…. Or people wont block intersections through a light rotation? Ok i get that….. but some times i enjoy laying on the horn and reminding my fellow man that they have made a mistake. Hopefully the experience tightens them up a little. We all need that. This technological rush and advancement is making humans lazy and disassociated with reality. All the while financially draining the average American who is essentially forced into some futurist vision of what reality should be? Not fair for the average folks in this country. Good for the folks in Sillicon Valley, not good for the folks in Eldorado Arkansas.

I think the difference here is riding horses and driving cars are both fun, engaging, rewarding activities. I know that does not go for everyone, but it does for many. I'm fine with self driving cars for those who just want to get places, personally I enjoy driving every day.

I think it would be cool for self driving everyday cars to become ubiquitous to cart the normies from A to B, then sports oriented non self driving cars being produced with more purity and focus. Current sports or sporty cars have way too many compromises. Car culture is huge and even growing among young people because of youtube and social media, I think and hope there will be a demand. Then again the all knowing government could put a stop to that.

It would be nice, except the safety regulation and budget may make that less likely. Sure maybe 5% of the people will have a fun car but the 95% would just buy what is good for the family instead. This is how we end up having so many people buying crew cabs and SUVs that also tow.

One thing I do want to see though, is once driverless car becomes popular, we will have 2 cars for road trips if you need more than what 1 can bring, and another to just follow along to carry stuff. This way there is no reason to have 1 gigantic car and a small car in each family. You can have 1 car carrying your family and another all the luggage, and everyday fuel economy.

That’s a interesting idea. Have a trailer that is self powered that follows you via tracking.

You seem to think there is only Silicon Valley and Podunk, and nothing between.

I do miss low cost cars but I sure do like the smoothness and quietness and cleanness of the latest ones. And for every used car on the market--somebody at some time had to buy it new.

Negative sir. Simply examples of areas where advancements in technology as well as exploding costs resulting from said advancements are sustainable compaired to areas where technology advancement make little to no difference (other then strapping them for cash) in a cost vs. value scenario pertaining to peoples lives. I am quite aware of what is out there. I travel around America to make my living.

All vehicles being level 5 only will mean 0 deaths from drunk drivers, 0 deaths from drivers on drugs, 0 death from bad drivers, and basicly reducing the number of yearly deaths from vehicle accidents to less than 1% of what they are now.

Considering that now that figure is around 30,000 deaths in the US alone each year, that is the saving of MANY lives.
