I recently did a DC2 type R swap in my 94' Integra GSR and the motor showed signs of having water inside probably due to pressure washing and having sat up for sometime. Once the "white" fluid was drained from the transmission and replaced with Castrol Edge 10W40 I noticed that when shifting down to 1&2 gears with clutch fully depressed that there was some slight grinding as if the synchronizers weren't fully braking the spinning gears. My question is whether any of the "synchromesh" fluids might fix this and whether or not they would be detrimental to the lifespan of the transmission internals? And which product has the best results overall?

Why are you running 10w40 in the trans? IIRC Acura said that should only be done if manual transmission fluid isn't available.

The Honda MTF is actually a very good product. I used that in my GS-R for many years and was always very please with it.

Is Honda MTF like Honda ATF?

They _really_ want you to use Honda ATF when servicing an auto. Is it the same for manuals?

The Castrol 10W40 was what my mechanic put in there which I honestly wasn't sure about either. I going to go the Honda dealership in the morning and get some MT fluid which should probably fix the issue.

The fact that your mechanic put that in there, and neither of you knew if it was right, is frightening. Please...drain that stuff and get Honda MTF in there ASAP.

Just a follow up that I finally drained the transmission and added the Honda MTF and it now shifts like Buddah and the grinding issue is gone. I'm definitely a believer that their OEM fluids are unique and the only ones that work effectively!

swankmotee, thanks for following up.

I would say, however, that I have had excellent results with Amsoil MTF in my 2006 Honda Civic. I have Honda MTF II in my S2000 now and will likely try Amsoil the next time I change it out.

Honda MTF II came out around 2006-7 and is thinner (ATF thin) than the original Honda fluid which was much more like Amsoil MTF in terms of viscosity.
