My best friends from high school, who were married for a few years and got divorced a couple years ago are getting again married, on the same day - not to each other this time. I have been invited to the respective wedding by both friends. I don't want to offend either one or both of my friends, but I can't attend both weddings on the same day. What now?

Another good option. I may or may not have done this on more than one occasion. Well not the Hawaii part, but happen to have something come up.

I rather like this idea.

Kudos to you! The weddings are in LA and in Chicago in the aftenoon. I like the suggestion of taking an impromptu vacation, but they know I already took off over two months earlier this summer, so that won't fly. Maybe Tinker and Blueberry could give me bird flu? Both have been looking a bit green around the beak for a couple days.

Send them both a nice card, and call them after the ceremony. If they ask tell them its not fair for you to chose, so you didn't. If its not a burden go and see them a month or so down the road, and get caught up.
At least that's what I'd do. If they are still your friends they'd understand

I am certain they won't be reasonable about this. Otherwise, I wouldn't be in a quandry.

Well, then I'd say it's time to decide if you really need such petty drama in your life.

I'd go ahead and send them both a card stating what "hansj3" suggested, and if that doesn't fly, cut one or both loose. Then find new friends with character.

I think life is too short to tolerate petty, backstabbing [censored].

Wot? Where did you read what I didn't write about petty nackstabbing?

I'd go the wedding of the person who had their wedding date first, and skip the vengeful retarded one who just had to have their wedding on the same date.

Don't even start to tell me it's a coincidence.

That's very good. I'll have to investigate who set the date first.

I thought I was being pretty clear. But here's my observation:

I am saying they are being petty, and backstabbing towards each other, and putting you right in the middle of it.

So I would do as I already said, and then proceed from there, depending on how they handle it.

They are still good friends.

Well it sounds like they are trying to pull you into their drama....

From outside looking in, it is simple:

Your choices are to go to one of the weddings, or abstain from both.

If you want to say goodbye to one friend, go to the other wedding. If you don't, then don't go to either one.

If you skip both, yeah they might be mad awhile, but if they're real friends that won't last...and is easier than, "I can't believe you went to THEIR wedding instead of mine!"

Is it reasonable to assume that *ALL* (or at least majority of them) of the guests would be exactly in the same quandary as you are? If they are still friends with each other as you claim, why would they put their friends in this situation? If that couple had produced some kids, wouldn't the kids be forced to choose to attend either mom's or dad's wedding?

Either I am misunderstanding the situation or you have lots of company sharing your dilemma.

Can't get any more time off/have to work because you took that vacation two months ago...

Or just send a nice gift and say you can't make it. No explanation needed.

Wish them well and live your life.

Sounds like weddings are in the name of spite not weddings in love.

Weddings here are after the likeness of the first Adam and not after likeness of the born again Adam.

Make a video flip a coin who's wedding you are attending and send it to them. They will get a kick out of it. Even better do it in a Google Hangout or Skype meeting.

enjoy!
