Two Thumbs Up to the Wahl Company

A couple of years ago, I bought a Wahl Model 9818 cordless, Li-Ion battery hair/beard trimmer. I'd had some really cheap, cheesy, plasticky ones in the past that didn't last, so I decided to spend a little more (I think I paid around $75) and get something that would hopefully last a little longer and perform better. It has a stainless steel body and many attachments for trimming your hair, beard, as well as that bane of the existence of middle-aged men everywhere - errant nose and ear hair!

And the Lithium-Ion battery and efficient motor promises a 4-hour runtime with a 1-hour charge, or a 3-minute runtime with a 1-minute quick-charge from a totally dead battery.

Well, I loved the trimmer until I'd had it for a couple of years and, for unknown reasons, it stopped accepting a full charge. It still worked, but would only run for about 5 minutes, then die. I lived with the situation for a long time, then finally decided to roll the dice and call Wahl, because I had saved the original box, which advertises a 5-year warranty.

I expected them to ask me to send the unit in, at my expense, along with my purchase receipt (which I couldn't find). To my surprise, the lady asked when I bought it. I didn't remember an exact date, so I told her it was a couple of years ago. She asked if it had ever gotten wet, to which I replied that it had not. After describing the problem, she immediately offered to send a new replacement. Less than 1 week later, the replacement was on my doorstep - and it's even an upgraded model that has better battery life and more trimming attachments! She never even asked me to send the old unit in!

This is great customer service!

I have consumer grade Wahl products and have had great results from them. It's good to know companies that care still exist. Kudos to Wahl!

Don't keep the Wahl plugged in longer than it takes to charge it.
I use this same M.O. for my couple other rechargeable units like laptop and weed-wacker.

Thanks for the suggestion. Certainly doesn't hurt anything to do it that way. But modern Li-Ion batteries don't have a memory. At least, not like the old NiCad, and even some of the older Li-Ion batteries did.

That said, I don't think that was the cause here. Rather, the problem was the design of the charger/charging port of the unit. It wasn't very substantial, and, after a time, developed a loose connection. The updated trimmer they sent me has a different design charging connection.

Thanks. But, the older I get, the more I realize that I definitely don't have most things figured out!

My parents bought me a Wahl trimmer to cut my hair when I was about 5 years old (much of my family was in the military, and I was obsessed with very short hair). I used it once a week to shave my head until about 10 years ago (about 25 years of use), when it got so dull it started to pull hairs like crazy. That life included me taking it with me to college, doing many friends haircuts and not always maintaining it properly. About the time it was dying (which was about 10 years ago), I got a gift card to a local store where I spent nearly $100 on the best Wahl they had. It is now roughly 10 years old, and going strong. It has once again been used every week to shave my head, and as of 7 years ago, do my son's hair cuts as well. I have no doubt it will live long enough for my son to take it with him when he leaves home.

Nice!

Sweet customer service indeed!

I use a Wahl trimmer as well. Been shaving my own melon since my mid 30s.

I've had a set of their clippers for several years. Made in USA which is kinda rare these days on such products.

One piece of advice.
Buy Wahl trimmers with a cord
I have had mine for 20 years.
No battery concerns!
