Turning A/C up during the day

We have a 5000 BTU unit in our bedroom window. It keeps our bedroom at 65 during the night and is off the rest of the day.
We have another 5000 BTU unit in our rec room. So basically less than 50 bucks/week to keep cool in the Summer.
 
Whatever your electric company is trying to goad you into doing via peak rates is probably what you should pursue. I assume you're most interested in saving money: saving energy being a means to that end.

What if you, say, put your refrigerator on a timer to kill it from 6-7:30pm? It would "coast" well enough and free up some pricy energy for your home AC unit, and not shed heat via the coils into your kitchen that would then have to be removed again by your whole house AC.

I like the blackout curtain idea. There must also be window tints and other tech that'll reflect heat from ever getting into the house.
 
Sunscreens will help, and if it's an older home you might want to check the insulation and ventilation in the attic. I just set mine at one temperature and don't touch it.

Lol it isn't that important to go extreme for timers and unplugging things, I was just wondering if I should click the A/C up during the day when not home.

The house was made in 1979 and has double-pane windows and wooden shutters over all windows, attic is well insulated. Also there's a large porch to the south which shades a lot. It got a new roof in late 2011 with the A/C (hail damage) and it has the new style vents on top.
 
So I get a discount from my electric company after 8pm on weekdays and all weekend long.

We moved our high energy activities (dishwasher, electric dryer, washer) to those discounted times and it has been working out pretty well.

We work day jobs, so during the day the AC goes to 78 degrees. When we get home maybe 74, then 72 when we go to bed.

1100 sq foot house, electric bill is always under $100 per month. Central Texas.

Absolutely. Heat infiltration is directly related to differential temperature. The colder it is inside the more heat (in energy terms) that passes through the house envelope and the more energy your A/C is required to remove. The smaller the differential, the smaller the required energy to maintain it. By the time you've got home from work it has cooled down a couple of degrees outside and you can drop the thermostat a couple of degrees. It will take some time to cool down the house and contents that couple of degrees, but with the much smaller heat input from outside its a net win.

This is also why settable temperatures by room (by window units, ductless/split systems or other such things) are also beneficial. With my ductless split AC, I can still use radiators in the winter, which is preferable to forced air, and I can program and cool the locations which have higher heat load to cool down before we show up, while avoiding the excessive draw of cooling the whole building. By the evening it is usually bearable outside, so we can then just cool down locations as we inhabit them to remove humidity. In case of the few days out of the whole year when we have a true heat wave and no relief, then we can run the whole thing and cool the whole home as if we had a central system. Even then, we let it rise a good deal during the day, to minimize electric use as the ambient temperatures increase, but to allow enough operation to allow dehumidification (there is something to be said for a dry heat).

We typically run no AC through the day, and only where we sleep at night, and enjoy a decent savings as a result.

I also have a few friends who have bought 5-6000 BTU window units to augment their central systems to do essentially what we do with our ductless split systems, and they have also seen reductions in energy use. The only issue is that a window AC is like 11.2 SEER while a split is over 20.
 
715 KWH a month is more than 3 times we use, last month we used 230 KWH (less than 8 KWH a day). Last summer we used 4xx KWH a month for 2 hottest month the last 25-30 years. I set the thermostat to 83F during the day and down to 78F in the evening then back up to 83F after 9-10PM. This year so far the A/C didn't run yet.

Like OneEyeJack, I open windows in the evening to let cool air in and close it in the morning to keep hot air out. More dust may get in the house so we need to clean a little more often.

My brother in Phoenix has his thermostat set at 85F all day(during summer months), he has about 8-10 fans running all day too. His bills were mostly around $100/mo.
 
whats wrong with turning AC off when leaving in AM and turning on when people come in in PM. i've been doing this forever. yes, the first 10 minutes could be a bit uncomfortable, but it's a great time to take a shower during that time.

It wouldn't work here, if I turned the A/C off in the morning it would probably go from 73 to 85+ by the afternoon. In the afternoon the electric company charges high peak prices and cooling the house off 12+ degrees would take hours and be very expensive. I'm thinking of going up 2 degrees tomorrow and see how long it takes to cool down when I get home.
