Trying to consolidate oils

Good morning!

So… I’m inventorying my oil stash and wanted to get y’all’s take.

We own a 2025 BMW X5 M60i with the 4.4 twin Turbo V8 and I just bought a 2026 RAM 1500 with the 3.0 HO Hurricane.

The BMW takes 0W-30 Euro and the Hurricane takes 0W-40 SP. I’ve been using Valvoline 5W-40 Euro in the BMW. It’s LL-01. Yeah, I know BMW wants me to use LL-01 FE 0W-30. It’s difficult to find and the dealer wants crazy money for a case of the stuff.

I don’t run extended OCIs in either vehicle. Call me old school, but running a 30 weight oil in a twin turbo V8 for 10k miles…. I just can’t do it. I change out the BMW oil every 5k.

I change out the Hurricane oil every 4-5k as well. A little earlier due to a 3.0 putting almost as much power as the 4.4.

My question is this…. The Pennzoil Ultra SRT 0W-40 is what I run in the Hurricane. MS-A0921 spec.

The Hurricane HO, from what I’ve read runs hot and can be hard on oil. If the Pennzoil is spec’s for the hard working HO Hurricane wouldn’t it be just fine for the twin turbo V8 BMW with a 5k OCI? I’d like to stock just 1 oil if I can. Just makes life easier.

Interestingly, Valvoline 0W-40 meets BMW LL-01 and the SRT spec... but calls out the V8 only? Kinda strange.

Consider an oil change kit from FCP Euro for the BMW to make it easy and not have oil bottles laying around. I really like the no-spill funnel they have and the adapters for valve covers. Wow that V8 takes alot of oil! Reminds of my old Z06 dry sump.

While it would probably work just fine since the Beemer is new, keep in mind Pennzoil Ultra SRT 0W-40 is not BMW approved.

SRT 0w-40 is good but I'd see myself running Pennzoil platinum 5w-40 in both if it was mine. It meets bmw spec and i doubt the dealer will give you an issue if you were to have an engine problem with pennzoil platinum 5w-40. They just check the computer to see how many times the oil level went down which they can do since the computer stores that information so never let the engine get low on oil. They can pull that even by remote access. But if you want to prevent issues and keep the insides very clean change frequently at 3-4k.

Buying simpler/more economic vehicles without high performance engines would have made life much easier. Lol. I’d just get the properly specified oil and chalk it up to the cost of having nice things. Gotta pay to play sometimes.

Yeah, it's slightly disingenous to make a particular vehicle purchase and then complain about the special maintenance of it.

That said, I think I'd be running a 40 grade mid-to-full SAPS oil in both vehicles. I think this application is begging for ESP x4 0w-40 personally. I'd gladly forfeit a tiny bit of SAPS to keep the viscometrics of the ESP. DexosR, A40/C40 I'd think it's quite capable for both vehicles.
