BMW oil Specification Question... Puzzling?

I found a link to a document that seems to contain a fairly decent explanation of the whys/hows of the HTHS specification. Keep in mind that I can't vouch for the source, nor do I know if the technical details are accurate. On the surface, I must admit that it appears as thought we (the USA) appear to lag Europe when it comes to the criteria required, applicable to average drivers or not, for testing lubricants.

I wouldn't say the US lags at all. The American oil companies know all about HTHS and all that. They are designing oils with different goals for different engines, different oil price range etc.
