So you guys are saying its a good choice ?

OVERK1LL - do we get any good deals on 0w40 in Canada ?

Thank You

Just so you're aware, even though it's spec'ed for a 5w-30, it's likely a 5w-30 that meets A3/B3 specs. In other words, a heavy 30 grade or better.

I have an '06 330i which has the same N52 engine as your 328i - a most excellent straight 6 BTW. Have been running M1 0W40 for about 50K with a 7500 OCI + Mann filter. The most recent Blackstone oil analysis report was A+.

The 5W30 spec is for BMW 5W30 (aka Castrol Syntec Euro Formula). If nearby, you can purchase BMW oil from the dealer parts dept ($6.50/qt down here) and DIY every 7.5K - you should be quite pleased with the results as well.

Transmission every 60K + differential every 30K and that car will run well over 150K. Forget the computer based service intervals, and definitely FORGET BMW's lifetime fluid hogwash. Enjoy that great car...Chef K

Welcome to BITOG! Can you post up that report please in our UOA section?

You forgot cooling system overhaul every 60-80K miles.

What should I use for transmission ?

Thx

M1 0W40 may cost about $1-1.5/qt more than BMW 5W30, for 8-qt sump the extra cost is about $10-12 and if you do 7.5k OCI, the extra cost per mile is 0.16 cents. If you drive 50 miles a day, the extra cost is a whopping 8 cents.

Stick? Auto?

Might want to ask on some BMW forum. In my stick I've used Pentosin MTF-1 (OEM fluid) as well as RoyalPurple Synchromax before without any issues. Redline also makes a trans fluid that people seem to like, but I forget which specific one it is...

FYI: both Mobil 1 0W-40 and German Castrol 0W-30 are readily available at Canadian Tire.
If you register with them you can list a number of items you are interested in and they will email you before they go on sale so you can secure yourself a supply.

Both these oils go on sale at Cdn Tire every few months.

I bought my stock of GC a few months ago when I was emailed that it was going on sale. I think it was about $6.25 instead of $9.69 at the time. I think the regular price is even higher right now.

I have chance to buy 2 cases of 0w40 ... not sure how old it is .. should I be concerned about shelf life ... it was sitting in not heated garage cold/hot ....
