BMW 325 with the M20 engine. I'll do the analysis after about 7500 miles mostly because I seem to have caught the BITOG bug visiting this site. German oil in my German car seems appropriate, though I may try GC in the M42 DOHC 4 cylinder engine in one of the other BMWs, haven't decided.

It's great oil. You have chosen wisely. GC is great too but some engines will burn GC but not 5W-40 oils...it comes down to what viscosity the engine does best on, how worn it is, and how hard the engine is driven. In the eyes of many German engines, anything less than a 40 weight is thin!

What the ****, give it a shot and see what happens!

I just visited a newly open Maverick Auto store in the neighborhood. They have pentosynth 5w40 for $6.95. My car is a BMW X3 and is under warrenty. Right now im using M1 0w40 for the winter & change it every 7.5k miles as substitute for the dealer free schedule maintenace of their own BMW 5w30. Im planning to use Castrol BC 5w40 or Amsoil 5w40 in the summer. What do you think of this oil(Pentosynth 5w40) compare to BC 5w40 & Amsoil 5w40. I know Castrol BC is cheap i can get it for $3.97 if its on sale on a local auto store and Amsoil 5w40 for $6.95 on a nearby European autostore and shop. In terms of peformance and quality w/c is best?

Thanks in advance....

AndyH, I am using Pentosynth 5w-40 but it does not have the "TS" designation on the label. Now I'm curious as to what the difference is.

Ken,

Not sure what the difference is. That might be an old photo of the bottle on the TDIParts site, as the pic shown on the Pentosin web site (as well as ECS Tuning) looks different:

The difference is that the TS is "teilsynthetisch" (semi-synthetic) while the other one is "vollsynthetisch" (fully synthetic). Says so on the bottles.

Pentosynth 5W-40 TS is not listed on the German Pentosin website. It may have been replaced by Pento High Performance 5W-40 , an HC oil with the latest VI improvers.
