So, i was talking to my brother tonight. He is using Mobil 1 10w30HM in his 08' Yukon 6.0 hybrid suv. Someone told him that the Mobil 1 10w30HM is the best oil out there hands down. I said "where in gods name did you hear this from; is it a credible source?!"

Is this plausible or a old wives tale?

Sorry.
My answer... Nope!

We can pretty safely state that it meets all the specifications and exceeds most of them. Barring a defective component, the truck will fall apart long before a oil lubricated part fails.

That statement is true of a lot of brands of oils, including Walmart SuperTech.

Use what you like, and enjoy life.

This is the same old argument.

What is better to get out of a 6-foot deep hole?
An 8-foot ladder or a 10-foot ladder?

Please argue amongst yourselves...

I don't believe there is a best oil out there. It is what suits you as a vehicle owner.

It has the A3/B3 certification (used to be A3/B4), so it has that going for it.

To keep a Synthetic at a thick 10W equivalent in the cold, they either have to a.) add plasticizers or b.) use more conventional oil, or probably both. Either way it's not going to be a contender for greatest oil ever, especially in very cold or very hot weather.

It was probably recommended by someone having an emotional attachment to the oil weight their Dad used.

Having said all that, if changed at a reasonable interval it'll probably take that engine safely all the way to the junkyard, when everything else wears out first.

Let's see... True! No, false! Right?
Don't ask me those hard questions!

It might be best for Mobil if you keep buying it...
All good.

There are PAO's which meets 10W30 grade without any VII's.

It's primarily Group III with a negligible amount of PAO. It probably has a small amount of ester like most Mobil 1 oils are believed to have.

It's a thick oil with HTHSV = 3.5 cP with a relatively small amount of VII, although Pennzoil Platinum PurePlus 10w30 has a lot less but is a thin oil.

Good oil? Yes, especially if you need a thick oil. Best oil? Of course, no. Also, it's not suitable for cold climates because it's a 10W-xx.

If a Mobil 1 user gets to 250K miles without any engine problems, he can say it's the best oil out there, right?
If Peak or SuperTech or TropArtic gets you to 250K miles without any engine problems, that owner can also say it's the best oil out there,
The "best oil out there" can be real subjective.
Isn't "what is the best oil" in a sticky here somewhere?

A 30 with a beefy HTHS … seal conditioner … hey, maybe the Old Truck/SUV oil … !
It's a good oil, leave it at that …

Well, a big portion of society gets hung up on good>>better>>best … so companies like Discount Tire use it without having a clue what you do with your vehicles …

Well I was told by a rep at Mobil that using the HM formula for long periods of time and then not using it will cause seal issues or wean for the sealing agents. Its getting colder to the point that maybe a 5w might make more sense going into winter. Also if he has been using Mobil 1 High Mileage for a bit that changing to something else might not be the best idea. If he just started using it maybe now is safe time to switch to Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage or Castrol Edge HM. Its a fair oil,but wrong weight for Northeast winters so ...FALSE
