Trop Artic Semi 10w30 Winter

Ok Fellers,

I have a butt-load of 10w30 Trop Artic Semi Syb that I snagged at $Tree. So... I live near Chicago . I have been using this stuff in my 2005 Altima 2.5 and 1998 Accord V6 all summer. Can I use it all winter around here or do I need to switch to a 5w30 for the Dec-Feb deep freeze?

Since you have been using the Trop Artic 10w-30 I recommend you use the Motorcraft 5w-20 in the winter. The chemistry is similar to Trop Artic and it has a pour point similar to Mobil 1 5w-20.

I know your cars may not be spec'd for 5w-20 but I run it in all of my vehicles (2 spec 5w-30). Don't think you'll have any problems.

Ditto. This oil is fine.

Why do some of you guys keep slamming this oil for winter use in some Midwestern states? Look at the numbers. They speak for themselves.

Al why not? We used 10W-30 dino there and not one of the engines died from oil related failure. Since my sister is still there she is useing it and here car currently has 189k on it.

Its really just a personal preference. Thats why I worded it the way I did ("personally"). I want to get as low a viscosity possible in there during startup.

Compromise with yourself - buy two changes worth of TropArtic 5W-30 at Wal-Mart for winter use if you're worried. Nearly, if not outright, identical to Motorcraft 5W-30 and only ~$1.28/qt.

There will be a drop in fuel economy in very cold weather, which may offset the savings of using the low-cost oil.

If you leave it in for 5000 miles, and are getting 26 mpg average, a 2% difference will cost an extra 3.8 gallons of gas.

I've run M1 15w50 and Rotella 15w40 year round in Indiana for years in passanger cars. Trop Artic's 10w30 is fine for the midwest...it pours better than many 5w30!

As someone else suggested, why not do an interval from say mid-December through February with an oil with a little better cold temp properties just to optimize?

One OCI with Mobil 1 5W-30 won't break the budget.

You'll probably be OK, bt if it drops way below 0, you may be hurtin. I plan on using the 10w-30 Trop Artc in a similar climate. Here's a list of record lows/month for Indianapolis here If it gets to those kind of temps then you and I both will be rethinking 10w-30

Look at their 5w-20 numbers and 5w-30 numbers from the PDF file. Aren't the cold weather properties about the same as the 10w-30?

TA 10w-30 is the ticket
