I am guessing if traveling that much you have 3 or so weeks? Look into using(leasing) a brand new car which then in turn get sold right after a substantial discount due to an avoidance of certain taxes. It can be cheaper than renting. Make sure whatever you get is diesel(cheaper).
I honestly think the border between France & Germany was easier than crossing back into US from Canada. They are not wound up like ours.
At least in France I much preferred high-speed trains that traveled about 1.5x the speed of a vehicle. It did not seem it until you paralleled a highway and found yourself moving much faster.
