...in my 02 Ford Explorer.

I want to change the fluid and have a lot of unused Mercon V left over from another project.

The bottles of Castrol Mercon V I have indicate that the fluid is backward compatible to Mercon.

I should be able to use it my transfer case I think. This vehicle has the Control-Trac 4 wheel drive system.

Do you guys think it is OK to use?

Thanks.

I was going to go with M1 ATF but then I found these unused bottles of Mercon V.

Are you talking about Control-Trac being tough on fluid in particular?

Definitely use up your MerconV and then switch to a full synthetic. Mercon-V is a step above Mercon.

The Control-Trac tx's actually have a clutch in them. So I can see they might be even harder on the fluid.

Ford recommend changing every 60k under severe conditions however I've been changing it at 30k. It only hold 1.5 quarts.

I put Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my 2002 V6 4WD Explorer at the 60,000 mile mark. The truck now has 72,000 miles and everything is working fine. This was the older Mobil 1 ATF formulation that said Mercon V on the front and had a Mercon V license. You will have no issues putting Mercon V in the transfer case, except potentially increasing the service life of the unit. :)
