Well I live in a subdivision but it's out far from town and there is a track maybe 5 miles as the crow flies to the west. It's far enough out that the trains are typically at about 40 - 50mph heading outbound (raw guess on speed). At night lying in bed it is quiet... then at first you hear a low hum then since there is a road crossing right there due west you hear the horn cycling as he approaches the crossing and then the clickety-clackety tempo of the rolling stock starts becoming clearly audible but hushed enough by the distance that it's not intrusive, then the steady whir of the wheels on the steel but just distant enough to be like a lull-a-bye on a mild night with the window open, lying in bed listening. I freakin' LOVE it.
