Trading up ? or a waste ?

The Silverado in my sig now has 79,xxx on the clock, Its in near perfect condition and i get compliments on it all the time.. It gets used for vacations (highway trips) and pulling my Polaris around on the trailer once in awhile.. Its multi color factory Its got almost new Cooper AT3's on 18 XD Rims, 4X4, power everything LT2 package.. Bose, 6 disc, heated memory leather seats, sunroof, onstar, all the bells and whistles.. plus brush guard, nerf/running/step bars, tinted windows vent shades, Line-X KC's daylighters, Weather tech floor liners, and all Redline fluids except Pennzoil SYN in the sump.. I keep it detailed out to near showroom condition inside and out and under the hood most of the time. Its a VERY nice extended cab pickup thats been paid off for years.. this trucks getting 3,000-5,000 per year currently.

So i look to my BITOG friends for your two cents.. Im thinking about trading..

I dont know much about the newer (07-now) GMC's (the 4 door pickups) other than the cab appears to be bigger and they have true 4 doors (we like that idea) Im fairly sure they still have the 5.3ltr my truck has..

Other than gaining a newer interior, and 4 doors are the newer current models much different on the mechanical side ? would i be gaining much ?

Im figuring im going to spend atleast $15,000-$18,000 to trade up into something similiar to mine (minus all the aftermarket ive added..

Hold on to mine ? or trade "up"

yes we have two Family 4-door cars currently in our fleet, so having a true 4-door truck is a luxuary, its not necessary.

opinions..
 
I don't see why you'd want to get rid of such a cherry condition truck for something with possibly unknown maintenance, could have been beat on and also it's not really any different other than a facelift and maybe a different dash. Same old same old, I'm a Chevy guy (despite my econobox daily driver being a Toyota) and I'm sure it'll last you a long time, and since you don't put much miles on it, I think it's pointless getting the same thing but newer. I guess that'd be like be selling my car and buying a 2000 Camry, same thing but different headlights and brake lights.

But if you've got the money burning a hole in your pocket and you're bored with the truck then go for it, maybe try something else like a Tundra or something.
 
You'll never get enough money for your '06 for the amount of trouble you've gone to in keeping it better than new.
It has all of 79K on it?

This would be a pure waste.
There is no rational justification for this trade.
OTOH, if you really want to do it and can easily afford it, what's stopping you?
There is no reason for you to do this other than your wanting to.
 
I would hold onto it. You know it well and if you trade you will be getting something you have no idea of how it was treated. Why get rid of a faithful old friend?
 
To me, light trucks have just gotten fancier, thirstier and more complex over older models.

It depends on what your definition of "a waste" is. I'm certainly no one to talk, given I maintain my vehicles like I'm going to keep them forever, yet I still trade them in every 3-5yrs. Right when they're paid-off or close to it. That's a financial waste.

I have a '06 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel, My Dad has a '09 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel, The '99-'06 GMT-800 trucks are hands down a better truck, The sheet metal is thicker, The interiors wear better, And never rode in a GMT-900 that didn't have some buzzing noises in the dash after some miles.
To be fair the Frame & suspension was a carry over on 2500HD models, 1500's got a revamped suspension that IS better....Mainly coil-overs & tall spindles.

Most 5.3L GMT-900 trucks have DOD/AFM, This can be deleted though.
The optional 6L80E trans is better than the 4L60E you have now, Not all 1500 trucks had 6-speeds especially the early '07/'08 models.

Money is not a issue, however im not one to simply waste.. thats why im throwing it out there. I prefer the Look of the new GMC's and truly like the idea of a full 4 door truck, however NO, my trucks not knocking on deaths door..

I also failed to mention.. my Silverado is garage kept 100% of the time other than when its in use..

At 10 years its not a new truck and resale value is threw the roof on trucks right now. If you want to upgrade get new, used trucks are generally a poor purchase.

Keep it. Spend the money you save on your next vacation and a spa day for your wife. 10 years from now when you finally sell your truck, post it on BITOG.
 
I would not get rid of it.....however .....if you do....how much would you be asking for it?
 
I'd hold. You'd take a depreciation hit in this plus the new/newer one.

If you can afford to pay cash, it's just your money. If you're financing if give additional second thought just because of the added burden.

Personally I'd keep the existing truck because I think they are more handsome than the newer ones.
 
I was actually thinking about trading in on a 13/14.. I figured id save a bit with a new/used truck..

I dont care much for the new Z71's split headlights.. however i very much like the GMC's new front end..
 
Keep your paid off truck. If you "have to" get a newer truck. Go with new one off the dealers lot that are selling at 80 to 90 dollars over invoice if you "have to" keep a GM truck.
 
Why trade? What would you get for the $18,000 that you're spending? (this is a rhetorical question)...you would have the same capability/vehicle type...that you rarely use...with no increase in reliability, features, or anything else...but you would $18,000 fewer dollars.

Look at this as a question of opportunity cost. You could take that same $18,000 and get, what, several week-long vacations in Maui for you and Mrs. Otis? Every single firearm (or tool) on your shopping list? A very clean convertible sports car? A new garage framed out and roofed in?

Sounds crazy to trade up in your case.

Well, when you put it like that....
 
Hang on to it for as long as possible, which sounds like another 10 years easily. Those trucks last a LONG time, and since yours is in such good condition, has low miles, and is paid off you have no reason to trade.
 
My brother has a 2008 2500HD Silverado he purchased new. And I have a used 2005 2500HD purchased a little over 3 years ago... he and I both prefer the interior of my truck , it's quieter for some reason than his. I say keep it.. you know it's history and it's paid for , the best kind of car/truck to have. Just my $0.02
