Yes. I think. The transmission is basically a differential, posing three shafts against each other, like a see-saw. Engine is on one. An independent motor/generator is on another. The third is the output which also has a second motor/generator.
It simply starts the engine by pulsing the 2 MGs against each other. IDK if there is a 12v backup starter.
The MGs also keep the traction battery charged, and it uses a step-down converter to run the house battery and electronics. No belt driven alternator.
They’ve had this transmission and system for … 2 decades now? It may be the best driveline they have going.
Just wanted to share my experience with this engine. It has been running strong, I am just a little under 200k miles on my 2021. I know some who have hit the 300k mark as well. Oil change every 5k miles and coolant every 60k.
Buy a Toyota blindly with this motor, it is one solid little unit.
