Toyota's new 2.5L has proved itself

OP...have you used 0W-16 oil mostly? always? sometimes? please elaborate.

Glad to see this. I have a 2023 Rav4..low miles so far. It is a fairly complex engine.
Fuel dilution is a problem on this engine, you need to remember that. I drive the heck out of this thing and fuel still showed up in a couple of my oil reports. In the last report, Amsoil looks thin although it is the thickest 0w-16(thicker than Mobil 1 ESP 0w-20) I know of. That means fuel. So you have to be very careful, specially in the winter. Maybe let the filter stay and suck the oil out every 2,500 oils?

I think if one thing could kill this engine, that would be the fuel in the oil
thats easy to mitigate by going up notch in viscosity.. and if applicable early oil changes.
my winter 4month oil change on the subaru has 3100 miles on it and I should have the results soon..
its a 0w20 turbo gdi engine.. this oci was m1 ep 5w30.. refilled with m1 ESP 5w30.
I'd expecting the oil analysis to show the m1 ep 5w30 solidly in the 20wt range.

It's not just the loss of viscosity that fuel causes, it may also affect the oil's anti-wear quality. I'm not sure about that but it's a good question

I’d run a 30 weight. It was my uoa with 0w30 HPL you saw. I’ve also run 5w30 no vII HPL in the car. If you search, I’ve posted several uoa’s from this car with 30 weight oil. I’ll post my next uoa, which should have around 7500 miles on it, but am currently only about 3k miles into this oci.

How bad has your mpg been affected?

Essentially unnoticeable, given variations while driving such as wind, terrain, temperature etc. cause greater fluctuations in gas mileage than using a 30 weight. I changed the oil, to a 30 weight, about 250 miles after purchasing it. It still gets phenomenal gas mileage and I surely wouldn’t use a 0w16 just to gain 1mpg; if that’s even feasible. I care about engine longevity, not an extra 0.3mpg personally.

0W-16 cst is 6.1 to 8.2. Your well within these specs on all your UOA? Whey do you think its dilluting?

FWIW I have an ICE version of this vehicle. I run 5W-30. Mileage dropped on the computer by about 3/10 ths MPG or basically nothing. Its un-noticeable when manually tracking any given trip.

When you lift your foot off gas downhill, does the engine shut off? In my hybrid it does. I'm curious about the ice version. Fuel dilution has not been an issue in my case because I drive a lot. Some fuel does show up but it is not enough for concern.

In my last report, Amsoil ended up at 6.7, and it's data sheet says 8.0. I think only fuel can cause that kind of a drop

I have the 2.5 and I my friend has one. Both UOA show very little fuel dilution.

Is there a VOA of that oil around here from the same lab?

Still - its well within spec. I think we have seen shear that far around here before? Maybe some of the smarter UOA folks can comment.
My oil temperature never gets above 170°, so I don't think shear was responsible for that drop. My oil temperature looks like that most of the time. So I wonder how a 30 grade will behave at those temperatures lol.

I have seen some really bad fuel dilation on this engine here on this forum, maybe your driving habits are different, you don't short trip the thing. My heads up was for the short trippers

I think 200k with no makeup during the OCI says it all about 0w-16. 0w-20 or 0w-16…who cares. Lots of driving with engine running at temp, or warm, is the easiest on the engine.
Can't agree more. And it's a van that hauls people and luggage. Those 200k miles have been some hard miles
