Toyota's new 2.5L has proved itself

The hybrid battery does not replace the alternator.
Incorrect rebuttal.

No starter? Does it lock the transmission and use the drive motors to turn the engine over?
Yes. I think. The transmission is basically a differential, posing three shafts against each other, like a see-saw. Engine is on one. An independent motor/generator is on another. The third is the output which also has a second motor/generator.

It simply starts the engine by pulsing the 2 MGs against each other. IDK if there is a 12v backup starter.

The MGs also keep the traction battery charged, and it uses a step-down converter to run the house battery and electronics. No belt driven alternator.

They’ve had this transmission and system for … 2 decades now? It may be the best driveline they have going.

AC compressor is also electric.

Just wanted to share my experience with this engine. It has been running strong, I am just a little under 200k miles on my 2021. I know some who have hit the 300k mark as well. Oil change every 5k miles and coolant every 60k.
Buy a Toyota blindly with this motor, it is one solid little unit.
Cheers!
did they already get rid of the 2.5?

new tacomas have the 2.4 turbo

It does have a transmission, and therefore does use ATF. I think the differential is within the tranny.
I see now. So just changing the transmission fluid takes care of everything unlike other Toyotas, like their trucks. Thanks l for the clarification
