I am picking up a new used 2014 Toyota Yaris and I noticed the really small oil filter. Any filter recommendations? Maybe a larger one someone uses? I am figuring a fram synthetic filter with mobile 1 synthetic. The cap says 5w-30 but a TSB calls for 0-20. I guess I will do the summer/winter thing with the weight. the car will see short drives where it doesn't warm up much so maybe the thinner oil would help somehow?

If you have XG4967 oil filter, then there should be enough clearance to use XG3614 or XG3600 (longest and biggest that I use on all my Toyotas), assuming you are going for the Fram Ultra oil filter.
And for the short tripping routine 0w20 works best, at least from my experience.

What's the reason the TSB says to go down to 0W-20?

Gas mileage, why else?

OP, why the NEED for a bigger oil filter? Are you planning to do extended oil change intervals and need more oil filter holding capacity? What's wrong with the OEM tiny filter?

My 06 Scion tC had what I thought was THE TINIEST little filter ever for the 2.4L block and I ran it for 10,000 miles with excellent UOA results. Insolubles were 0.2 - 0.3% which shows that the filter was doing its job. I ran the same filter 2x the OEM recommended 5,000 mile interval. Why mess with something that doesn't need fixing? You've got a TINY 1.5L. That thing barely sheds any metal.

Ditto on oil, or Toyota 90915-YZZF1, or F2 (shorter) filter. I get them here and received the latest genuine Toyota/Lexus dealer stock. With Toyota drain gaskets included. I use Mobil 1 Ow-30, happy with oil and filters. Mobil 1 is $23 at Walmart with a $12 off each jug rebate from Mobil for a cost of about $13 per jug with my tax. Plus filter cost of $3.45 each.

the F2 is even cheaper. A little longer reach in to replace than F1

90915-YZZD3 is a Toyota Part number for the biggest oil filter to fit on there. Fram Ultra XG3600 is the equivalent, and in my opinion is the ultimate upgrade over ANY other oil filter, whether store bought, dealership bought, or boutique. 5w30 in your climate should be good. In hot&humid North Carolina 0w20 serves me well in a short-tripper though.

XG3600 and I'd go with Mobil 1 AFE 0W-30 over the 0W-20 if it's short tripped a lot. TSB I would ignore, if the engine was designed for a 30wt, then stick with a 30.

The engines are pretty stout. My buddy went almost 17k on Cam2 5/30 semi syn with OE sized Full filter a while back and have had no real issues since, hes probably put about 20k on it since this anaylysis. Of course the analysis was pure poop.

The 1NZFE is a tough little engine, but mine has shown that the combination of fairly low gearing, timing chain, & VVT-i can shear down even highly regarded motor oils (mine sheared 0W30 AFE into low 20 weight range at only 7K). My opinion would be stick to 5W30, and use something really good if extending past the factory 5K recommendation-like RedLine, Castrol Edge, or M1 EP (my choice for 10K)/AP. Verify with UOA! I run Ultra XG3600 filters on it for 2 10K OCIs, the last one I cut open looked like it could easily handle 30K (it was on for 19,700 miles). Doesn't protrude below the oil pan, either.

Living in AZ 5w30 is a good choice, 10w30 may actually be the best choice in those temps (usually lower Noack). I wouldn't bother using a bigger filter or using the filter multiple times.

No need for a longer/larger filter when 15K and 20K designed filters are available, such as Mobil M-103 and Fram Ultra

If this is your first 1NZ-FE you might want to survey the filter to block clearance as any substantially larger diameter filter might be out of the question.

OP did not mention what part of AZ he is in; Temps can be in the teens and 20s in parts of AZ, IIRC.

I wouldn't worry yourself for a larger filter even Toyota pushes the OE filter out to 10k. Go with 5w30 the MPG gain would be minimal using 0w20.

14 Yaris is pre-Mazda, I have a 2016 Scion iA which is the sedan version of a Mazda 2.

You are right. My error. 2015 was the first year
