Toyota to replace 100,000 engines in recall

the copium is strong. Toyota produces the same vehicle for decades and people are in awe that they are reliable. They have to get with the times for once and fall on their face.

There seems to be some of that - but I’ve always avoided 1st year when possible

What would keep people from simply driving the car until the engine blows up, then bringing it in for the replacement then?

IIRC, there is a time limit on having the recall done.

To Toyota's credit, they are taking responsibility and doing the right thing. That is the take away from this.
Other automakers would likely just deny the problem exists and blame it on poor maintenance by the customer.
