You know, they'd have never thought of it if you hadn't mentioned it... Now we're going to have post after post of people obsessing about their dipsticks!
 
Given a choice I prefer the softer side of the washer (in this case, thicker felt) against the pan since, generally, the crush area is larger on the pan side than the drain bolt side. Tegger's nice diagram illustrates this.
 
The OEM Toyota oil drain plug gaskets were aluminum and that is what I purchased from Clips and Fasteners. Never a problem with sealing torque to 33 ft lbs.
