I was reading the owner's manual for a 2008 Highlander today- same 3.5 V6 as the Sienna. Toyota recommends 5W-20 without the towing package and 5w30 if equipped with the towing package. The oil cap also stated 5W-20. My 2008 Sienna only recommends 5w30.

I've got the same engine in RAV4 and use 5W30 (specified in 2006 MY). I did some towing this summer and saw some metal particles after oil change (20,000). Too bad I didn't save for oil analysis.
Looks like I may need to consider 5W40 I used in my previous towing car.

Our 2007 Corolla says 5w30 on the oil cap and in the owners manual. There is a Toyota service bulletin That says 5W-20 is OK too,but check with your dealer,so that they're on your side, esp.while still under warranty.I'd probably use 5w30.

I took a 5w20 oil cap off of a new Tacoma and traded it for my 2006 5w30 oil cap. I now run 5w20.

I got the same barn burner going with the 2005 Accord wanting 5w30 and my revised 2006 model which is a MMC (Mid Model year Change) wants the 5w-20 and says 5w-20 on the oil cap. I guess the change made it even tighter and the tolerances that much better.

More than likely they just reran the lubrication formula with the engine designers and found that 5w20 works. Nothing physical as far as tolerances or machining was likely done.

the T.S.B. from TOYOTA giving o.k. for lighter oil is EG018-06 which replaces EG001-06 . This bulletin was posted in '06 . I just got the BULLETIN sent via e-mail from the TOYOTA service center where we bought our '08 YARIS . Give the the number above ( EG018-06 ) to HEAD TECH at service department and have him / her get it from their system ( TOYOTA's ) and get a copy in person , through e-mail , or by regular mail . That way you'll have a leg to stand on if there's an issue with warranty work .

that be it :- ) . Make it official by getting it through a TOYOTA service department for warranty . We even made copy of the e-mail from service department employee that had the attachment of the T.S.B. to open . Figure the more proof where it came from the better . Sometimes it's good to be anal . ;- )

When your service department runs out of 5w30 and starts using 5W-20, be sure they put a new 5W-20 oil cap on. It'll pay for itself in a few months. That old 5w30 cap will leak all over the place if you put 5W-20 oil in there.

Well then, I guess the M1 5-30 will be just fine since so many say it shears down to a 20 quickly anyway.
