Toyota dealer experience, thumbs down

I took my Jeep in to have a TPS replaced @ 35,991 miles. And ya it was over @ 36K.

They tried to weasel out of doing the work for free but I wasn't going to have it.

Then they called me 3x that day trying to get me to replace other things.

They called trying to sell me a differential drain and fill for $180 per axle. I told them that I indeed had that on my mind and was going to use the Torco oil that was on the floor.

They started with telling me that it took a special oil and that my oil wouldn't work.

2 more calls with tough sale pitches for other things. One being a coolant drain and fill. Hello I work at a Radiator shop!!!

The last time they called I asked is it done and they said no we wanted to let you know about the other...........And I cut him off! I told him to just fix the #%##ing sensor!
 
Am I the only who thinks the OP is overreacting?

The dealer did you a favor, period. They didn't have to do anything for you, at all.

I'm not so sure, if it trips the CEL, wouldn't it be covered under the emissions warranty? Which I believe is 8/80 give or take.

The emissions warranty only covers emission related parts.

Well if you ever need a job, you should fit right in at my dealership as a service advisor!
 
If I posted about my GM car having a bad engine computer and a leaking intake gasket in less than 36K miles it would have resulted in 3 pages of "GM sucks," "when will you learn," "Toyota is the best."

What a joke.

Well if you ever need a job, you should fit right in at Ganley Toyota as a service advisor!

I'm not saying that the dealer treated you well. I'm just saying that they were under no obligation to goodwill the repair.

It is common knowledge that when you request a warranty repair on a vehicle that is even 1 mile over the warranty period, it's very likely that you'll have to put up a fight.

Did you miss the "60,000 mile powertrain warranty" part?
 
FWIW, I have a printout from the dealer I bought my car form saying that since the car was delivered with 10 miles on the odometer, my effective factory warranty is 36,010.

I recommend that anyone buying a new or certified used car get a similar document/statement. It already came in handy once, since my car has extra 3,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage (certified used) and the dealer tried to weasel out of replacing a bad tire pressure sensor.

Did you miss the "60,000 mile powertrain warranty" part?

It's possible that manifolds are not covered under the powertrain warranty.

That's the only reason why the dealer would say it was a goodwill repair. Otherwise, they wouldn't put up a fight.

I've had reasonable results from using my nearby dealer down here. That being said, I don't trust them.

Most dealers here are locals using the toyota brand as a trading name. So going to a private mechanic isn't necessarily better for the community. for example, the toyota I go to is e.g. "John Smith motors trading as New York Toyota".

John Smith motors would have been there since cars were invented.

There is a good mechanic who does all our work vehicles across the road from our office. we trust him. only thing is - my camry has a fuel filter replacement coming up and it is one of those in -tank ones I think you need special tools to get to. I rather take it to him.
 
I just had an excellent experience at my Honda dealership.

One is a simple no-start when I turn the key sometimes, it always starts on the 2nd turn and this happens once or twice a month. At 32k now, they said they'd cover it "goodwill" if it actually went bad at some point in a year or so. It's not a permanent thing, just a starter, so I am giving them slack not to fix it now....a problem they cannot reproduce anyway.

The 2nd issue is a botched fender painting they did to warranty repair small peeling paint next to the headlamp. The fender is not matching, darker red, like a used car lot paint job. I got the runaround from the body shop, but the service manager and VP gave me a nice sit-down chat and said they would re-do it. The SM called the VP in and introduced me as a "nice guy who won't beat him up". It had a Sopranos feel. "The VP is a personal friend of mine, I'll tell him to throw you a bone". Funny.

They really treat me well at this Mega-dealer, quite a surprise. When I went from Acura to Honda, the Acura service guy said to just still come see him, shout out to "Todd". I get ~nice~ loaner cars, brand-new TSX and RDX, they are peeling the plastic off the fenders as they toss me the keys....but Honda does not actually offer loaners, hmm.

They respect people who do not make their jobs harder. I also give all 10s on surveys. They also like that I know my stuff. I did mention that I have a standing offer to come work at the local BMW/Porsche-Audi VW dealer. So, basicly I warned the body shop (by sweet talking them) ahead of time that I would not accept some [censored] used car lot paint job, to save them the hassle of a do-over, but they tried to get away with some [censored].

1. It should be clarified whether this is covered under Powertrain or not. The SA should know this off the top of his head as he deals with it daily. Odd why he didn't step up with the info right away.

2. SA's know their factory guys and know what they can and can't get away with, warranty wise. All it would take was for the SA to call his District Service Manager and ask for a favor. Takes two minutes. Why argue with the customer first? Let the factory guy be the bad guy if that's what it comes down to.

That is assuming you can actually get a hold of this area rep and/or get him/her to actually call you back. I tried for THREE MONTHS and could not even get a call back on my new Tacoma going bald, the cracked composite bed, having to buy tires 2 weeks into ownership because they would not balance and the dealer wouldn't keep trying nor replace them, and all of the other issues the dealer would not do anything about.

I finally sold that piece of [censored]! and NEVER got a call back from the rep. I even wrote Toyota HQ about the horrendous nightmare I had with the dealer and rep. No response from them whatsoever either. Not even a standard form letter.

The other guy who posted that they have got so big they no longer care is dead on. They are an arrogant company with an arrogant dealer base. Funny but most of the loyal fans of that brand are also arrogant. Must be a prerquisite to own a Toyota or work for the company?

Actually, in this instance it is you. No "favors were being done for this guy.

Let's assume that it is not covered under the 60K PTW as you mention earlier( it would be but let's assume ). It most definitely WOULD be covered under a 3/36 Bumper To Bumper warranty which he has. The vehicle was delivered with 19 miles on it thus his actual 36K figure would be 36,019. He brought it in with 36,014 miles so he is covered. Period and end of story. No favor is being done. He also has photographic proof that the light came on before the 36,019 mile mark( ie; showing mileage of 35,996 on dash with service engine light on ).

Any dealer, be it good times or bad, should not make a big deal out of 19 miles over. I worked in this field and actually worked service at a dealer and you do NOT hasle a customer over 14 miles. Just don't do it.

I see no overreaction by the OP whatsoever.

The 8/80K Federal emissions warranty covers the PCM and the cats. That's it.

Exactly! This is a case of a Service Writer trying to make some extra $$ for the dealership, and met some resistance. He was hoping for a lay-down. They try it sometimes at some stores, and all the time at others. The B-to-B warranty would cover it, and the miles were not an issue here.
