Had an interesting warranty experience I felt like sharing. Might strike a few nerves here.

Yesterday, my wife informed me that the check engine light was lit on our 2006 Corolla. At this time the miles on the car were 35,996.

We had had a check engine light before that manifested in some hard shifting behavior that was resolved, clearly under warranty, by replacing some expensive engine control module or another. This was a relatively hassle free experience that was soon forgotten.

By the way, the dealership, that I was previously happy with, is about 17 miles from our house.

Preparations began in earnest. My wife called the dealership and explained the situation, they left her with the impression it would be covered.

The thought of having the car towed to the dealership crossed my mind.

I settled for taking a picture showing the odometer reading and the lit check engine light. I also called Toyota customer service and explained the situation, they took out a file, gave me a reference number, and the name of the local rep.

Armed with this I took the car in. I think the odometer read 36014 when I got to the dealership.

Friendly service advisor guy says it will be about an hour to check it.

Hour and a half later I am informed it is an intake gasket leak causing a lean condition. "This is covered under warranty, right" I ask.

Argument with suddenly less friendly service advisor ensues. I mention the picture, call to Toyota, 19 miles on the car when we took delivery, etc. Service advisor says he will have to talk to the service manager.

I sit for fifteen minutes while service advisor goes about his business. Finally, I walk in on him. "Have you talked to your manager?" "Not yet, a few minutes"

Finally he comes back and tells me, no charge for the visit, they will call when the part comes in, and it will be covered under goodwill but the car is not under warranty. At this point, they have lost both my goodwill, and my repeat business.

Was really surprised they even attempted to stick me with this one! Times are tough on the sales end I guess.

Suddenly the Corolla loses much of its lead over the Saturn ION sitting next to it in my garage!

Sounds like your premonition of a service hassle came true. I'm sorry to hear that.

They called it goodwill? Ugh. You know they're going to hit up the factory for the warranty amount so no goodwill is being extended. Since you've told them you documented the problem, they'll take all your info to the factory to ensure they get paid. I hate it when a business acts like they're doing you a favor when in fact they're getting what they want. It stinks when a "service advisor" refuses to go to bat for you. Hope it all works out OK.

If the Toyota warranty is 3/36,000 than that was some stunt they tried pulling. Thanks for sharing, glad I'm not in the market for a car. Hopefully it was just an issue with the dealership and not Toyota because if it were Toyota doing that I wouldn't go near one. In bad times I'd imagine dealerships trying anything they can to generate extra revenue. JMO

Thanks, then in that case they're trying to rip off the customer, and possibly double dip. It should be reported to Toyota. Sadly they get away with it sometimes.

they were talking to each other to try to figure out how to scam you. You would pay for the repair out of your pocket and Toyota would reimburse them for the warranty repair. 60k powertrain warranty baby. the fact that they didn't mention this, means they were trying to scam you the whole time. Don't hate toyota, this is a dealership that did this to you.

i ALWAYS stay away from the stealership, even while under warranty i take it to private garage for all of the warranty checks, which are a total ripoff. that way i develop a GREAT relationship with my private mechanic, who NEVER rips me off, and is always very reasonable. find a privately owned garage run by the owner. My guy happens to be from Poland even, but he will do anything on my Subaru, or Colt, or Crown Vic, even bizarre stuff that i would have thought only the stealership could fix. I also do him a favor and make sure i own the appropriate shop manuals, even though he actually does not ever even need them.

My OWN mechanic even doesn't care if i buy my own parts online, at about 1/3 the stealership price, and installs everything happily, even fluids i buy myself. In fact, it is not even worth the wear and tear on ur coronaries and risk of a heart attack getting into these fights with the stealership, just only go to stealership with something obvious/expensive that they have no choice replacing, or just go straight to your own private guy, who is HAPPY to get your work, and you always FEEL GOOD, afterwards, you are supporting someone in your local economy. the money i save on buying my own parts, and the honest repairs with no padding of unnecessary work, means I am way ahead. all i use the stealership for is to buy a car. i don't buy my service there. and i buy it with the least amount of options. as long as there is a motor bolted to a chassis and some wheels, i am happy.

It's the dealerships who try pulling stunts on you, not Toyota itself, afterall: almost all Toyota stealerships in NA bid their rights as an authorised dealer of a particular automotive brand and they themselves do not represent the actual car manufacturer.

I would make this point really clear...

Q.

That 'yota dealership sounds pretty shady, but it doesn't surprise me in the least.

One of the big reasons my entire extended family has owned mostly Fords over the last two decades: the local dealerships have been great.

you had em all along but didn't know it-----19 miles on delivery extends the warranty to 36019. period.
Regardless, I would let the salesperson know of your experience and never return.

you live in ohio, why not buy a cobalt and G5 and help out your neighbors in Lordstown who assemble those cars?..100k warranty too

I've had nothing but bad experiences at Toyota dealers. I guess because Toyota has become so popular, they think they can now get away with bad service. Not smart IMO.

I realize that, (made mention in my second post) and that is why I suggested contacting Toyota Corp. I worked in 5 different dealerships and learned all the little tricks in all of the departments. What sucks is the dealership unfortunately represents the company since they are the first link to Toyota and relied upon for warranty work as well as service after the sale. Many times a bad experience at a dealership will destroy repeat sales for the auto maker. I'm sure Toyota would love to hear all about it. Maybe the dealer will get a little slap on the wrist, or a kick in the arse, that all depends on their volume.

RIGHT AWAY.

Post the name of the STEALERSHIP here.

(I'll give them a call and let them know that their "service" is being posted on the web. Word of mouth is the best or worst advertising..)

Your car has a 60k powertrain warranty like stated above.

My 2005 has 125k on it and never been back to the shop. Still going like new. I'm going to replace the spark plugs for the first time today.

Take care and sorry to hear some @#%& stealership messed with you.

I'd have a hobby now if they did that to me.....

Nice idea, word of mouth can make or break you. Post the name and help a fellow BITOG member avoid a problem if they were planning on doing business with that rip-off dealership.

I've made a few dealerships my hobby, and they ended up being very rewarding hobbies for me over the years. When it comes to money and getting ripped off I don't let up. Its paid off time and time again for me with many different products and companies.

To the OP: Contact Toyota at the very least and see where it gets you!

Unfortunately when Toyota landed on these shores they were desperate for dealerships and signed some contracts that now they would prefer not to have.

For example a lot of southern states are handled by a middleman who undercoats every new toyota and charges a lot of $$$ for the privlege. If you are in that territory you are stuck!!

Toyota corporate knows this and invented Lexus as a workaround... so that lexus buyers won't get shafted by toyota branded dealers.

That really sucks, and could really hurt a brand name. I still think Toyota should be told, it can't hurt.
