Sounds like a Toyota bashing thread to me.
Exactly, and why automakers haven't equipped cars with fuel filters for years now.'Bad gas' today is rare as Unicorn urine.

Kinda hypocritical to say that now, huh ?Or it sounds like the dealer was trying to hose her.
If 'bad' is rust particles from a low volume old gas station (steel tank) then the strainer on the pump could clog up. But there is sludge settled in the bottom of your tank, refilling stirs it up, and finishes the job of blocking the pump inlet. Total speculation but been there, done that.I think we will find out tomorrow or Wednesday. I’m skeptical about the bad gas theory. Why would the car drive completely fine on “bad gas”, then leave them stranded on a completely new tank of fuel?
Not with E10 that has phase separation at the facility But faulty underground tanks are getting replaced. I still have gotten too many bad tanks of Mobil or Shell so now I'm sticking with IRVING. One time we had a medical emergency rush to hospital and I had to womp on the car with the NISSAN with bad gas, That was the end of that engine and converter ever running well.'Bad gas' today is rare as Unicorn urine.

I'm going to say fuel pump. There is a recall for 2018-2020 Corollas due to faulty fuel pumps.
Running the tank low is a good way to turn an iffy fuel pump into a bad fuel pump.
For reference last month we were charged $1,500 to dispose of a 20 gallon mix of gas and diesel. And yes the customer paid and was charged what we were charged.Replaced the fuel pump in an old Altima a few days ago. Access through a panel under the rear seat. Removed panel and the pump, then drained 7 gallons of 8 year old gas from the tank (the car has been sitting 8 years) in less than 10 minutes with a transfer pump. Gas smelled a little odd, so I'd say it was bad, but still, gas is gas. Poured it into the half full tank of my driver, and it ran just fine.
1. So yes $600 seems excessive. Why the need to drop the tank? If you can't siphon it out the filler, or you don't have access from the top, you could command the fuel pump on and collect it at the fuel rail.
2. What exactly was bad about the gas? I assume it wasn't age. And what about it would cause the car not to run?
$1,500 is nuts. Must be a Cali thing. Around here you can drop off used oil for free as well as chemicals and solvents at the county dump. Might be a 5 gallon per day limit, but still. I would have added it a gallon or two at a time per tankful to a beater until used up. Or use as a weed killer on the lawn, or drive to the desert and pour on the sand where it will evaporate. For reference last month we were charged $1,500 to dispose of a 20 gallon mix of gas and diesel. It is a combination of California and shops have a completely different set of rules we have to follow compared to a person. We can't just go to the county dump and toss things. Everything has to go through official channels and be kept on file.$1,500 is nuts. Must be a Cali thing.
