I think the newer Toyotas are calling out a 10K OCI in the owner's manual for normal use conditions. So yeah ... if the engine has been taken care of and is pretty clean inside.

Slots or holes is about flow, but from a stamping metal perspective the pierce punches for the slots are harder to make, but the cut pieces (slugs) are maybe a bit easier to collect and get out of the die because they are less likely to stick to the end of the punch. Usually a press making these end plates (tapping plates) has to run at least 30 strokes per minute to be cost competitive. Class over.
Total flow area of the base plate inlet holes is what matters, not the shape of the holes. More flow area means less pressure drop (delta-p) with the same flow volume from the PD oil pump. Larger hole area doesn't cause more or less flow, only causes more or less delta-p.
