Toyota 2.4L Turbo engines have problems?

2 weeks ago, I asked about the Tundras with their 3.4L V6 and learned they were having problems with them. Now I like to hear about these 2.4L turbo engines they are putting in the Tacomas starting in 2024, and been doing it in the Highlander for a few years now.

A neighbor has an LC250 landcruiser, it has the 2.4 I-forceMax engine (the Hybrid version also available in some Tacoma's). It's been about a month, no problems yet...

He insisted I take it for a spin. It has torque from low RPM, but the sound is a bit underwhelming.

No engines as of yet, but a couple automatic transmissions failed before 2,000 miles and are a couple months out on getting a replacement.

There is a post on the Tacoma forum claiming to have a failed engine and the dealer having three others needing replacement, but it is 99.9% a troll post at this point.

If something happens to mine I'll make sure to update my post on my '24 Tacoma. I hope nothing really happens to it. I really like the new turbo 4 despite the naysayers.

What grade oil does the manufacturer spec for the turbo 4 and what are you running.

0w20. I only have 1300 miles on mine so not ready for an oil change yet. I plan on running 0w20 and an OEM filter during warranty. I'll do the 5K oil change myself and let the dealer do the free 10K's just for records sake.

Interesting they spec it with a 20 grade and not bump it to a 30

I would say Toyota engineers know what they're doing, but as of late uhhh :ROFLMAO:
Again, the goal of Toyota corporate and what Toyota engineers thinks is best may not and likely are not aligned. There are a whole lot more considerations that need to be factored in other than what's best for your engine to run 300K miles. It's just a fact of the world we live in today with regulatory requirements. There is a point with all manufactures from all industries where good is good enough to meet whatever internal goals they have but that doesn't mean good is the best option. If you only drive a car 100K miles and sell it who cares, but if your goal is 300k miles, I wouldn't blindly follow Toyota recommendations.

Lexus 500h with the T24A-FTS has 5w30 in the European user manual.
But we all know that its just U.S CAFE lobbying that are removing higher viscosity from your user manuals by now, right?

The real get out of jail free card is I think almost every Toyota or Lexus manual I've read has a sentence about under severe conditions a thicker oil may be best. They don't specify any viscosity and so it is easy to argue that so long as the thicker oil meets certs/specs you are good.

Yep.

Because I can’t predict that there will be absolutely no towing for the entire oil change interval, I use a viscosity that “will provide better protection during hard use such as towing”.

Contingencies are therefor covered by using 5W30 in the Tundra.

Yea, with the new to us Camry my parents bought that will see a 90% rideshare duty cycle, I’m running 0W-16 in it. Despite the fact Toyota hybrids don’t see redline, it’s still considered a “severe use” case.

I have 5w30 in two Tundras I maintain for friends, and in a RX450h(it was used for gig work, but it does see long drives at freeway speeds). A RAV4 Hybrid I will do the oil changes on soon will use 0W-16 or 0W-8 since I feel that person’s driving habits doesn’t require “thick boi” oils.

So, it looks like there may be some cases of oil filters cross threaded from factory. One already lost and engine and current ETA is August for a short block. Not sure on the second case.

However, this isn't an engine defect per say. But another QC issue on Toyota engine plants. 1500 miles on mine so far and haven't seen this and transmission issue yet.
