I'm thinking of complicating my life a little more by buying an 11 year old car with 109,400 miles on it. It would not be a daily driver but a second car for me. All of a sudden this has my interest because I've never had a station wagon nor have I owned a 5 cylinder car. From what little research I've done so far, the 5 cylinder seems to be a respected engine. But with the age and miles there are bound to be problems that will pop up. Price is down to $7990. Seems fair. But do I want a car that could turn into a project? Aside from oil changes, I would not be the guy to work on the car. Should I buy or move on? My wife and I both have cars so we don't need the car. It would just scratch an itch.

- With the right exhaust an inline 5 sounds glorious.
- VW 5-pot is known for 4 cylinder power with 6 cylinder fuel consumption. (Lol, @pbm said the same thing at the same time)
- Volvo turbo 5 pot is a better option in my opinion, but most are older than 2013 Jetta.

Bonus:

You said it best in your first sentence, LOL.

If you do your own work having one more car than driver helps as you can get to projects on the weekend with mail order parts vs doing things immediately with junk from Advance.

I can't comment on price too much, but it seems a bit high.

Somewhere, just this moment @TiGeo’s and @edyvw’s ears have perked up and they don’t know why….

I’d say do it. The 5 cylinder experience is kinda cool. They do have a vibration that’s harder to tame, but they have this cool mix of the playfulness of a 4 with better torque of a 6, kind of similar really to a Subaru boxer, but without the boxer penalties of high rpm limitations from the longer intake runners. They also have a chorus sound to them with that 5th cylinder.

And, wagons ftw. I’ve had a bunch and loved them. I recently found a used gen 1 S60 wagon in pale green for sale for a song. I mentioned it 3 times and my wife used soft sounding “no” at first and it was scolding/begging by the 3rd. (She doesn’t understand).

The Jetta wagon shape is quite good.

Wagons are fun and very practical. You can fit a ton of stuff in them. My sister has a 2013 Jetta 2.5L (sedan) currently sitting at 225k miles. That is quite the achievement considering I've nicknamed her the "car destroyer" from her driving and poor maintenance habits. It has actually required less maintenance in the 200k she has owned it compared to her previous 2005 Civic. It is actually a pretty easy car to service and maintain.

I am no VW expert, but I was researching the Beatle at one point and I thought the 5 cylinder was the one to get - if reliability was what you wanted? I thought the 4 cylinder TSI was the one to avoid - which was why the 10 year old Jetta's and Tiguan's are so cheap compared to their counterparts.

Not a wagon fan but if I ran into a cheap BMW wagon I would likely have to buy it. Same with a TSX sportswagon. Jetta Wagon probably not so much, but to each their own for sure.
