Hey, I bought 3 jugs of Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5w40 oil thinking it would have the LL01 approval (because it had one before), but apparently it lost it not too long ago. I mean it still has the Porsche A40/VW502/MB 229.5 approvals which are about as demanding as the BMW LL01 so is this oil still good to go for BMW M4 G82 (S58B30) or should I shell (ha get it) out some extra money for the Motul 8100 Xcess gen2? Thanks for the help.

It's probably ok from a technical standpoint, but you're under warranty so it is a risk in that regard. It's a fairly unremarkable Euro SN oil, I'd feel better with PP Euro / Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40, M1 0W-40, etc. I don't think the Motul is anything special and should perform similarly as those two. Personally, I'd not use it but I doubt it will damage your engine.

I'm no longer under warranty so it doesn't matter much. I'm located in Europe so we've got no Penzoil/Redline and stuff like that. I considered Shell Helix Ultra 5W40, but it's more expensive and doesn't seem better than the Motul 8100 Xcess gen2 5w40. Regarding the M1 0W40 FS I think it's different than what you have in the US, because here it doesn't have the LL01 approval.

No OPF here 🤫 and soon the second cat will be missing too haha.
I see. Well, I think the M1 should be LL01 by now on your shelves unless it’s very old stock. That new formula is also in EU. As far as the SHU vs Motul, it should be similar but personally I prefer the SP additive package of the SHU quite a bit and Motul 8100 is just your average Group III anyway. I am assuming you won’t have the SP formula of the Motul yet but I could be wrong. The SN version of the Motul has similar looking VOA to this Total oil, coincidentally. I realize S58 doesn’t suffer from LSPI that we know of, but I prefer the newer additive packages personally just for peace of mind.

I’m sure you could run this Total without problems, but let’s see what others say.

Since I haven't received any other responses and I don't want to risk it I found the SHU 5w40 with the LL01 approval for a decent price and bought some jugs.

By chance, do you know the HTHS, Noack and TBN of this batch (June 21st, 2024)? Most recent datasheet I'm able to source is from 2022, I wonder if the formulation changed since then.

It's the same oil as Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 so you can look at those VOA also.

I looked at an older jug of this Total Quartz 9000 Energy 5w40 that I bought at the AA 'Clearance' last year and it doesn't list the BMW LL01 approval either. If I'm reading the date code correctly it was made in late 2022. I just used this oil in a family members Kia Optima 2.4 with 160K miles that does better on 5w40 (doesn't burn it off like 20 or even 30W).
I believe the viscosity is a bit higher than the QS Euro 5w40 that I used previously but it shouldn't hurt anything.

i dont know which country the OP is from, but i guess he is from Europe and maybe from north ,as made in germany shell is very rare to find in the rest European countries.so if he is from that part of Europe ,i think except Finland ,all the other countries is hard fo find M1 0-40 sp,and the old one is different fs one. so we left with that shell and motul xcess gen 2.both good oils, with shell very good noack.
no Porsche A40 approval on this. Tit for Tat...
whats going on with Porsche approvals?..they are disappearing from many good oils..is it an oxidation failure or ,new standards from Porsche like bmw had? the way you argue ,are you implying something ? what this Porsche approval actually means to you ?

All the Shell Helix ultra 5w-40 are made in Germany (that are sold in Finland), also its now t Api SP , api sn+ was also made in Germany. Think Shell moved production after Russia started the war with Ukraine

indeed..

but in the foto above ,from the OP, on the back of the bottle it states that it meets..there is a lot of mess in many companies, fuchs does that with supersyn longlife 5-40 and bmw ll01.there is on the site but not on the bottle..
and of course i dont forget motul and xcess gen 1 same case..

i havent used one yet,but from what i saw ,here at the south balkans ,its written made in eu..dont know after 2023 ,i havent search for one at the shelves.
but we still cant find any api sp here, only sn and sn plus..
a lot good oils are missing here at the south..at least , i found motul xcess gen 2 sp ,price 64 euros, when the usual more expensive 5-30 xclean + costs 54 euros. xclean gen 2 sp , costs 78 euros ..all 5 lt.. so not in all countries a 5-40 is cheaper.

Will look more closely at the bottle tomorrow, can take pictures off it and post it here. I personally hate the shell homepage since it can be a big mess,
