torque estimate for drain plugs

Car - 08 VW rabbit.
Application - 17mm hex removable threaded plugs for MT

Doing an MT fluid replacement on her car. Got both out with a standard 1/2 drive ratchet, fairly easily. MT casing plug look like they may be some sort of aluminum.

I dont have a torque spec for these. Any idea what is right? I have 14mm Al plugs that go into a steel diff case on my MB, and I think they take 44 or 84 (I can check them). Should I use a similar value? Also, what about antisieze, copper or nickel based?

wow 44/88? i'm pretty sure it's 18 or 22 ft/lbs they're fairly commonly used on transmissions.

This is a 17mm allen-key removed drain plug, not a 17mm bolt head. Thus it does not neck down or anything, it is wider than the 17mm allen.

If it's a tapered thread I would be gentle with it as it doesn't take much torque to keep it in place and if over-torqued can be a so-and-so to remove.

My sierras transmission has the hex sockets too for the transmission. It does not take much to get them in there well. I use no Anti-seize I just get it in there till its nice and tight but not overly tight.

Use teflon tape or non hardening Permatex on the threads, if anything Don't go crazy with over application. You want sealing insurance - anti size for corrosion or sticking is not a problem.
Torque? I go by years of educated feel.
Those threads are pretty big, but I wouldn't go over 40.

My MB with a 14mm hex same type plug was spec'd for 44 ft-lb. I put it that tight, but backed them off and re-torqued to 30 after the amsoil info above...

Hopefully I didnt damage them...

I think it should be fine. Next time you do a drain line up a new drain plug up at the dealer then if you need it you can just pick up a new one and replace it.

JHZR2 - You didn't do any damage, you simply seated it a bit further. Those are tapered threads.
