Toro VS Snapper

Problem with Toro commercial series mower is you can almost get a (great used) commercial run behind unit for the same cost. 22295s are ~$1400.

Personal Pace is junk on hills.

My lowly Honda HRR self propelled mower is on it's fourth year, and it mows about an acre twice a month. Bags, mulches, and cuts the grass just fine. Clean and grease the rear wheels is the only maintenance I have had to do on it.

Honda has the one year extended warranty event going on right now for residential mowers.

Yep, they are high. And, they are VERY heavy. But, they are nearly indestructible, even in the hands of minimum wage employees who abuse and neglect them. To this day, I occasionally see old ones with Suzuki engines still being used. GOD only knows how many hours are on them! Landscape maintenance contractors still need 21" mowers for the places and situations where the big walk behinds are unusable or inappropriate. Homeowner grade mowers in this size class will not hold-up to commercial use (abuse) and end-up costing commercial users much more money in the long run. In the old days one would see a lot of Snapper 21" commercial mowers being used by landscape maintenance contractors, but now, you mostly see them using TORO 21" commercial mowers, even at their high price.

^ I hear you wag. I always browse CL for older used commercial Toro stuff hoping to snag a deal.. Been watching for years!

I am the same way. I look for gently used residentially owner commercial pushers. I have bought two for the cost of a big box mower and the only downside is I will probably never get to buy a "new" mower.

If your last experience with a mower was a twenty year old craftsman then any of the suggested mowers will be a revelation. Toro Super recycler (pro or residential), Honda twin blade, snapper ninja, etc. all are excellent and within a few percent of each other performance wise. One may mulch 4% better but bag 4% worse etc. Buy the one that has the features that most appeal.

I would argue that if you work with each of these everyday commercially you may notice the 4% one to the other. A homeowner is just going to notice that they have a heck of a mower compared to the big box stuff.

My brother has the Toro super Recycler and loves it.
It has the Honda GCV engine.
He bags most of the time and hasn't complained about anything.
He went for the Toro from a Honda engined LawnBoy due to the
wash out port and large bag.

My 2¢

Yes, retail is around $1400. I've seen some new offered on-line for around $1100, which is about the same price as Honda HRC. Even the Honda HRX units are around $800. Id rather spend another $400 and get true commercial if I was going to spend that much...

A Toro recycler and a Snapper Ninja are not in the same league. The Snapper is a 25 to 30 year mower. A recycler is a light duty mower and they typically last 6 to 8 years. The Snapper requires quite a bit of maintenance to the drive components after 10ish years, which can be expensive if you can't do it yourself.

I love the Snapper system and have fully rebuilt and refurbished several older ones for fun. I find them fun to work on.

Now, if you are considering a Super Recycler, which is the same price as a Snapper, then I find them to be superior to Snapper mowers. They are also built with heavy duty components and should last 20 plus years if maintained. They are also much easier, and cheaper to maintain long term than a Snapper.

So my recommendation for your new mower, in this order:

1) Toro Super Recycler
2) Honda 217
3) Snapper Ninja

Way down the list) Toro Recycler (basically don't buy, they are junk)

I wouldn't call the regular Recyclers junk, especially with the Briggs Quantum and personal pace. They aren't in the same league as the Super Recyclers or Snappers, but they are certainly a notch above the true junk, which is your basic box store MTD garbage and the flimsy Murrays at WalMart.

I have a few customers with the Recycler mowers and they have held up fairly well, even the Tecumseh powered ones that I thought would have blown up 5 years ago.

Personal Pace is only junk on hills if the cable linkage for the handle isn't adjusted correctly. It should basically walk with you up the hill or pull you slightly. The cables do get loose over time which definitely impacts performance. I'd say a lot of the ones that I maintain need a cable adjustment every few years.

If you go with the Super Recycler don't be afraid of the Toro 159cc engine, it has plenty of mulching power and uses way less gas than my Recycler with the Briggs. I can mow my yard three times on a tank vs two times with Briggs.

As others have stated it's a pain at bagging, it does a good job but the bag is small and hard to empty.
