At least for professional techs, the current trend for SO/Matco/Mac boxes is to have 2-3 long drawers (54-62" long), followed by numerous shorter length drawers.

Or some folks prefer all long drawers:

Who do DIYers like? I am curious what your ideal drawer setup would be.

I like a combination. My main bottom box is a KRL761. There is a KRA4059 and KRA2055 sitting on top of it for no particular reason other than one was free and the other was my grandfathers. Next to that is a an older version of a KRA2407 that I bought used when I was 13.

Is this the preferred format for most DIYers as well? Just curious what your ideal drawer setup would be.
Do I prefer long drawers over short ones? Well that all depends on if I am wearing shorts or jeans 🤣

I've often wondered about this. I like the concept of more drawers that are wider. As stated, you can divide however you want and who cares if you open a drawer that also has things you're not after?

I feel like this is one of those things where we just can't escape our own thinking. We just think we've always used lots of small drawers, why would we do it differently?

Similarly machinists think they have to have a brown Kennedy or they're not a machinist. I've never understood it, most are friction slides and annoy me. I've worked out of 26"-36" cabs with bb slides all of my career, but I guess I'm not a real machinist.....bummer.

Hard to fit some items in the small short drawers. Would rather have all full width if I had to choose. Most the boxes with a mix is good

Something like a KRL1032F is a good set up IMO

When I was wrenching I never had the money for those fancy long drawer boxes. All mine are 24 or 26-in. The longer stuff either goes diagonal or setting outside the box. Now that I don't wrench for a living anymore I just live with it. Have never bothered buying anything with longer drawers. In fact in our kitchen we have one drawer that's 36 in long and it's pretty annoying. Everybody has to get out of the way to open the darn thing. So you can count me in the short drawer category.

Certainly, but at least for me a kitchen and a toolbox in my shop are considerably different environments. I can't recall the last time I was standing at my box with a second person, but for many of us kitchens are social settings where people gather

I have a 62" roll around tool box, with one large top drawer and the rest are half width. They are large enough for everything I use. I prefer the smaller drawers, but keep in mind they are not small.

You can pry my brown Kennedy from my cold dead hands! On one hand, that box is roughly 60 years old at this point and still in decent shape (bought it from a guy who was retiring). On the other, Kennedy wants almost $900 for that exact 26” 8 drawer top box now which is ridiculous for something with friction slides. I certainly wouldn’t buy one new lol.

I prefer long drawers, that way I can divide them up as I see fit.
