Took K&N out, put PureONE in

My V6 Altima also has the filter mounted horizontally. Many Nissans use a cam-chain that has a tensioner that relies on oil pressure to take up chain slack. I've heard owner's of Altimas also complain of brief start up noises too. I'm thinking it's probably because the cam-chain is a little loose for a second or two until the oil pressure builds up.

I've used a Motorcraft (ie, basically a Purolator) and a NAPA Gold on my Altima ... have heard no start up noises with either of these two filters. Next oil change, I'm going with a PureONE.

Was looking at a NAPA Gold for my car at a local parts store priced at about $8 a few weeks ago. I hope the PureONE works out OK. I don't have many options left.

Thanks for your input.

So, if I get the same noises with the PureONE I guess I may have to learn to live with it and hope they're only the cam chain tensioner or whatever. Worst case I'm out about $10 for a filter. :)

Defiantly report back on how the PureONE works out. I'd be interested to know, as I'm switching to PureONE for the Altima on the next oil change.

I almost certain you're talking about a VQ35, right? If so, there's a TSB out on certain versions of the engine that addresses the wonderful phenomenon of "Timing Chain Rattle", which appears to be what you're describing. I drove an 04 G35 which also had a variant of the VQ35, and though I was not covered by the TSB, I had the rattle. I tried several different filters, but they seemed to cause no change. I ended up using GC in my VQ and that seemed to minimize the problem, for whatever reason...

Yep ... TSB# NTB03-060a (applies to only 2002 & 2003 VQ35Es). It's actually the VTC (Valve Timing Control) sprocket that rattles. The TSB says to replace if the rattle noise lasts more than 1 sec on a cold start up.

SB:

Thanks for the reminder. I actually had that TSB in my archives, and it prompted some recall of my discussions of the issue with my dealer. Acknowledging what the TSB says, the "expert" at the dealership insisted that the real issue was the timing chain rattling in the brief interval before full OP hit the tensioner. Who knows. . . Not a problem for me anymore, at any rate.

I think so too, but I have seen certain folks here lately saying that the K&N produces start up noises. If they are saying that about the K&N, then they are saying that about the Mobil 1 filter, as they are the same filter except one is sans welded nut on the top.

I love when people have startup noise for a half second and blame the filter. Also how can a person even tell it is a half second???

What would you blame it on?

To SuperBusa:

I still seem to get the same minor startup noises.

Maybe it's just the cam chain tensioner before it gets lubed in oil and nothing at all to worry about. I have a Nissan OEM filter that I *may* install in it this Nov when I do my next OCI.
