I have had 2 vehicles where the oil filter did in fact cause an increase in engine noise...
1 - 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L V6. Had problems with OE filters( for some reason ), Fram( I didn't like the vehicle so didn't care what I ran ), and Bosch. Others reported good results with M1 so I tried that and it stopped it. Only 2 OC's while I had it( sold at 9500 )but had to keep swapping filters to find a quiet one.
2 - 2008 Chevy Equinox 3.4L V6. Had awful startup noise with Napa ProSelect filters. OEM AC and standard Purolators were fine.

I won't use any filter that drains out overnight. It's hard on the engine. I personally haven't had a start up noise (yet) with K&N, or M1 but heard about it a lot...I mean a lot.
My fiters are right side up though and probably never drain out much except for a minor siphon effect.

If my engine ever ran rough or made noise after changing oil filter brands, I would immediately change back.
To the OP...just change the filter and leave the oil alone. In 10 min or less, you'll know for sure if the filter was the culprit.

What really surprised me the most was the Wix. I don't know how they test them to get their beta ratings, but they filter very well, it seems, compared to others.

My tacoma is using a k&n. Sits outside....no noise at start up.
