The dealers tell you that they must be serviced by a dealer, and most people take the bait and get ripped off badly. Observing my family with a Renault dealer in 1975 who routinely failed to replace a 20c crush washer (which ended up with 5 litres of new GTX dumped when he replaced the leaking old washer), to a series of farcical mistakes by a Nissan dealer, the only dealer service I would ever get is the free 1,000km check.
In reality, it must be carried out by an MTA mechanic, with "appropriate" knowledge of the vehicle. Most of the franchises (like Repco) issue service briefs for everything on the road. They are acceptable.
For my Nissas (Warranty just expired), I did the oil and filters myself, then got the local Repco guy to finish the service (wheel bearings, chasssis tensioning, brakes, rotations and balances whatever).
