Too Many Mobil Oil Choices

WalMart has Mobil 1 0W-20 in Extended Performance, Advanced Fuel Economy, Hybrid, ESP X2, Truck & SUV, as well as High Mileage and Advanced Fuel Economy High Mileage. All within a few dollars for 5 quarts.

Is all of this really necessary? Can't imagine what could possibly be the difference. The wife's Kia called for 5w-20 but said 5w-30 or 10w-30 was acceptable in our temperatures. Been using the latter. Runs perfect at 140K.

Mitsubishi says 0w-20 for the new Mirage but can use 5w-20 if it isn't available.

Is it necessary to have 50 different cereal choices? No, but people like choice. And in almost every case there are differences between each and every one.
Agreed. I mean, there are twenty-four different choices for Cheerios and and thirty-three choices for Pop-Tarts. In the end, they still are Cheerios and Pop-Tarts.

To the OP, what are your OCI's like, is it 5000, 7500, or 10,000 miles.

The original meaning behind Mobil 1 (I believe) was one oil for everything hence Mobil 1. Now it's more like Mobil 5,000. The PCMO oil market has fragmented into many niche grades to grab market share. Some are a good idea, some are not.

Some of this might be blamed on all of the different OEM oil standards out there, which keep adding up over the years. Most of them are pointless. The HM and Truck & SUV oils meet some of the Ford and Chrysler specs that the others don't (they list 9 different Ford specs alone). The ESP meets some Euro specs. It might be hard to make one do-it-all oil that meets enough specs to maximize market share.

The Hybrid product was probably added for marketing reasons more than anything, and having three different high mileage oils seems excessive.

Only because the title said "Mobil" and not Mobil1, i'll throw in Mobil Full Synthetic too.
OP's right, it's too many choices for all of them to be successful IMO. But we'll see.

I think there is only 3 Mobil oils at WalMart worth considering.

compare that with Amsoil... they only have 24 oils available for gasoline engines and they dont even qualify as a mass marketer.. :)
Can you imagine, now this would be before Bitog, and also before Mail Order stuff, a store that sold every oil out there, what would it be called. LOL

thats why I get mine at Costco... they have 3 flavors available... not much wondering which one is better, or has more HT HL, or Phsophoris, or has an extended drain interval, or which one to choose because of the nice packaging..

I would guess it’s 100% about capturing shelf space at places like Walmart. If it wasn’t mobil1 someone else would stick their brand there. The illusion of competition.
I think with a Mass Market outfit like Walmart its only the big guys even get a chance at shelf space and sometimes they even compete with WM for prime shelf space versus WM's own products.. because WM sells alot of good old Supertech...

offhand I'm thinking what is on the oil shelf at WM besides Supertech, Mobil, Shell, Chevron, Pennzoil, QS, and maybe Motorcraft and Valvoline on a regular basis..

For sure. But the less M1 the more Shell - for example.

They do the same thing with canned corn. There can’t possibly be any more difference between canned corn then there is engine oil, but they still have 10 different brands of canned corn.

I have often said that Exxon Mobil has too many oils. I don't understand why they need two lower tier synthetic choices for instance (Mobil Full Synthetic and Mobil Super Synthetic) They could actually do away with both of those choices completely and just stick with the Mobil 1 lineup of oils. And even in that lineup of oils it's a bit ridiculous. Do they really need a Hybrid oil? No. Do they really need a Truck and SUV oil? No. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if some of their oils are carbon copies of each other just with a different label on them.

There does seem to be a concerted effort to confuse and frustrate the buyer. What if I put hybrid oil in my euro diesel? Will it explode? should i go ahead and EP it instead or X2 the HM? All questions I dont want to ask myself when in the walmart aisle. I need to check the clearance aisle for near expired baby formula or a orphaned spatula from the spring collection.
