Time to replace my Corolla, what should I get?

I don't get why Toyota enlarged the xB and replaced the xA with the xD and put in the 2.4 liter engine. Now they're compact cars that get so-so gas mileage when compared to others in their class.

22/28mpg is stupid low for a car this size. I had a newer Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8L V-6 and got almost the same figures.

The Rios can be found from time to time one of those loss leader deals in the dealer's newspaper ad. I have seen the Rios listed at 7999 before.

I think you guys are mistaken about the Scion Xd. I believe it has the Corolla's 1.8L engine. The Xb is much larger, and has the bigger engine, so the Xd should get similar MPG to the Corolla.

I stand corrected. Still would rather have the xA though.

The seating position of the new xB feels like you're driving a much larger car and I don't like it.

The xD and the Jeep Liberty/Patriot/Compass are very frumpy indeed. But then again, my 00 Saturn isn't very easy on the eyes either.

The second gen Saturns don't look all that bad on the outside. The xD was probably the lovechild of the creators of Hello Kitty and Godzilla. Japanese obsession with cuteness and an attempt at making it aggressive.

edit: Now that I think of it, I don't like many designs of Toyota lately. The tC, a few SUVs, and the Camry with certain body trims look okay. Other than that I don't like them.

What kind of MPG do they get?

22 and 28 are the epa estimates for city and highway.
2.4 liter 4 cylinder.

No good. I want something that's going to get AT LEAST as good MPG as my Corolla (38 MPG).

Yes I have. In fact one of my co-workers has a brnad new one, but again, it doesn't get as good as MPG as my Corolla. He says it actually is pretty terrible for MPG's for a car it's size. He says it only gets like 25 MPG in town. My Corolla get 33 city.

I really like the looks of the tC also. With nice rims and tinted windows, it looks pretty sweet.

It does look nice, but it sucks gas. They only get like 28 MPG highway.

I liked the manual, but like I said earlier, the auto always seemed to be over-revving or bogging and for some reason, I thought the one I drove was only a 3 speed. I've driven both Civics (manual and auto) and as much as I liked the manual (because I'm a manual kind of guy), I loved the auto. I also noticed it shifted at lot, but the up side to this is that it kept the engine at just the right RPM. Not too high, and not too low.

As far as utility goes there's no comparison. The Yaris HB was much more versitile with it's fold flat rear seats and the hatch. It's more like a microvan than a car really. I really need cruise control and I don't think it was available on the HB until just this year. I suppose I could always add an aftermarket unit. Power stuff isn't a necessity, in fact I absolutely hate power windows because they always stop working. I do like power locks though and unfortunately you can never get one without the other.

Grampi, I'd keep the current Corolla you've got and eeek out another 100,000 miles from her...then consider...

....the Yaris has more driver seat/area room then your Corolla, and more then the 2009 Corolla! So it will be very comfy on long rides, even if the over all size of the Yaris is smaller then the Corolla.

The Yaris comes with a 4-speed auto, and it tachs under 2,000 at 40 MPH, so it does not "over-rev".

You can get a 2009 4-speed auto, with power windoes, dual power mirrors, CD player, iPod/MP3 au jack, and 40/60 rear folding flat seats for $12,900 out the door. You can get a used 2007/2008 with under 20,000 miles for around $10,000 or less.

I get 44-46 MPG highway from my 2007 4-speed auto transmission hatchback, and love this thing.

Funny you should mention the Yaris. I just test drove a brand new '09 5 door liftback "S" model. It had the the 4 speed auto and I loved it. I also loved the 5 door version as compared to the 3 door, much more versatile. However, I wouldn't be interested in getting a new one, or getting the "S" model. I like the tach, but this car is WWWWWWAAAAAAYYYYYYYY overpriced at $17.5K. I don't know what was different about this Yaris as compared to the first liftback automatic I drove that always felt like it was in the wrong gear. This one drove very nicely and the transmission seemed to work just fine at keeping the engien RPM's where they needed to be. You're right about the being more leg room up front than my Corolla. It was very comfortable. This is my favorite contender so far (though I will have to drive the Civic again and the all new '09 Fit).

I've never looked at a Yaris. Is it really that roomy up front? I hate it when those center consoles are hitting your right leg. Is the inside actually roomier than a Rolla? I'm a big guy, 6'2", 300#, do you think I would be comfy driving it? What kind of revs would the engine be pulling in 5th gear with a manual trans at 70mph?
